Highlights:
BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS and LEAST BITTERNS continue at the Altamaha
Waterfowl Management Area in McIntosh County. Nesting ANHINGAS have been found in
Spalding County. This is the first breeding record for the Piedmont region of
Georgia. A MISSISSIPPI KITE in Spalding County. WHITE IBIS, 30 MISSISSIPPI KITES
and an AMERICAN KESTREL in Columbus. AMERICAN KESTRELS on private propery in
Clayton County. Wading birds in Clayton County. Several interesting WARBLERS in
Athens.

Paul Sykes and Ken Blankenship both reported BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS at the
Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area south of Darien. They were seen on both sides
of U.S. 17. Paul reported a record 43 birds and noted that several pairs were
mating. This species may soon be nesting in the state. There are breeding
populations in both Florida and Charleston, South Carolina. They also found 2
LEAST BITTERNS and PAINTED BUNTINGS. There have been sightings of BLACK-NECKED
STILTS at this location recently.

Eric Beohm and Mike Ivie found a nesting pair of AHINGAS in Spalding County. This
is extremely far north for this species which has nested in Macon in recent years
and has slowly increased its range northward. Eric also reported a COMMON MOORHEN
and MISSISSIPPI KITE in Spalding County.

Jeff Sewell and Carol Lambert found COMMON MOORHENS on the property of the Clayton
County Water Authority. They also reported a PIED-BILLED GREBE with young, 2
AMERICAN KESTRELS and 2 singing SCARLET TANAGERS. This area is closed to public
access. At Lake Blalock they observed a SNOWY EGRET, LITTLE BLUE HERONS, GREAT
EGRETS, GREEN HERON and GREAT BLUE HERONS.

Walt Chambers reported an immature AMERICAN KESTREL at Oxbow Meadows in Columbus,
and 3 to 4 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS (with evidence of nesting) at the Application
Field. He also found 30 MISSISSIPPI KITES and 3 WHITE IBIS at the Application
Field. There have been large congregations of kites there during the last few
years. This area is located near the Chattahoochee River off South Lumpkin Road.
Take Victory Drive to South Lumpkin Road and you will see the sign for the
Columbus Water Works on the right. Take that right, pass a golf course, and then
you will see the kite field on the left hand side of the road.

Eric Maioriello reported 8 species of warbler in Athens at the State Botanical
Gardens, including, WORM-EATING WARBLER and SWAINSON'S WARBLERS.
