The SANDHILL CRANES nesting in the MWC were sighted again this week. 2 adults
were observed on July 1st along Carncross Rd.
No Colt was seen with the adults, despite efforts to locate it. If searching for
the Cranes, other areas to check are the cut corn
field along the south side of Carncross Rd., or try to find the Cranes by
scanning from the DEC Parking Area at the end of Morgan Rd. Keep in mind
a few attempts may be necessary.
Refer to page 74, Grid D1 in the NYS DeLorme.
A WILSON'S PHALAROPE described as an adult molting from breeding to basic
plumage was discovered feeding
in Benning Marsh along the Wildlife Drive on the morning of the 1st. It was
relocated by many still feeding in Benning Marsh on the
2nd, but not seen thus far on the 3rd. The appearance of an adult Phalarope
indicates that the autumn migration period for Shorebirds
has begun. Other Benning Marsh shorebirds seen today the 3rd, included both
Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers, all adults.

The first year male SNOWY OWL discovered on the 14th along an
extremely busy highway in a densely populated part of the City of
Syracuse was last seen on the evening of the 28th. The Bird had been faithful to the
Solvay offramp from 690 westbound.
It would perch on the exit sign, adjacent light posts, and the small pumphouse by
Onondaga Lake. The entire area was mowed around the 26th,
and may have convinced the SNOWY OWL to move out as it was fond of hiding in the
tall grass behind the pumphouse. Note that June 28th is an extremely late
date for a SNOWY OWL in NY State, likely the latest ever recorded.
Several photos have been posted to the OneidaBirds Listerv:

A single female DICKCISSEL was still being seen from the Howard Rd. area near the
grounds of the Oswego County Airport as of the 28th. The male previously present
has gone unreported since the 24th.
The female DICKCISSEL (when present) perches atop fences on either side of
Howard near the go-cart area.
PLEASE NOTE: there are NO RECORDS of nesting Dickcissels for Oswego
County. If traveling to this site, please DO NOT play tapes or
otherwise molest the Dickcissels in any way. Stay behind the fences and
watch from the roadside. See DeLorme pg. 74, Grid B-3.
Also at the Oswego County Airport area, one can find multiple
GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS as well as UPLAND SANDPIPERS. Both
species were mentioned during a positive Dickcissel posting from the
26th. Once again, images of the DICKCISSELS can be found here:

Of general interest, a good number (5-7 pairs) of Cliff Swallows were noted by an
observer sent to the Sky High Sodfarm
to purchase sod for a landscaping job. The Swallows were nesting in the eaves of
the yellow pole barn, but can easily be seen from the
road as the feed their young. Observing from the roadside might be a prudent idea,
unless permission to walk in can be obtained. This is a working
farm, watch for large trucks and constant traffic. The Sky High Sodfarm is located
along Lakeport Rd., DeLorme pg. 76 D-1.
Jefferson County

A single CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was heard vocalizing from Ransom Rd. in the Perch
River WMA, from a "wet
spot where a pipe passes under the road". DeLorme 91, Grid D-6.
EXTRALIMITAL: Ferd's Bog, Hamilton County

The female AMERICAN 3-TOED WOODPECKER was seen a total of 3 times during a
series of visits by Birders on the 1st and 2nd
to Ferd's Bog. Observers report OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS vocalizing as well. Ferd's
Bog is
reached by a well marked trail that begins at a parking area off Uncas Rd. in the
town of Inlet. Refer to page 86 in the DeLorme.
