Yesterday [and today], at Laguna Creek, just across the railroad tracks from
the new Chase Palm Park, a LUCY'S WARBLER was foraging in willows and weedy
vegetation. Walk east along the railroad track for about 100 yards from
Garden Street.
A first-year male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was found at Carpinteria Creek on
the 30th, just below the Carpinteria Avenue bridge. No word this week on
the WORM-EATING WARBLER that was found the week before near the 8th Street
bridge.
A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen at Devereux Slough on the 31st. A PECTORAL
SANDPIPER was here on the 30th.
Two BELL'S VIREOS were seen at Gaviota State Beach on the 28th. Walk east
(left) immediately after you go past the entrance kiosk to where the
campground comes up to the edge of the stream. The birds were in the willows
just upstream from here. Three BLUE GROSBEAKS were also seen along the
entrance road.
Two WOOD DUCKS were at the Bird Refuge on the 27th.
At the harbor sandspit, six BLACK SKIMMERS were present on the 27th.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was found on the 29th on San Ysidro Creek. It was
near the upper bridge and could be seen from the green space trail that runs
north and south along the creek. Access the trail from San Leandro Lane,
just west of Crane School.
An adult SOLITARY SANDPIPER was still at the Goleta Sewage Plant on Monday.
Please sign in at the office.
This week, the following birds were seen from the UCSB overlook to Goleta
Slough, which is just opposite the Environmental Health and Safety building
on campus: A PECTORAL SANDPIPER, two WHITE-FACED IBIS, 17 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
and a flock of 19 AMERICAN AVOCETS.
On the 24th, two SPOTTED DOVES were on the UCSB campus, in the vicinity of
Campbell Hall.
On the 30th, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and seven BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were found in
River Oaks Park in Santa Maria. Go to the south side, which is on Stanford
just before the school. A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was also here on
the 29th.
At Waller Park in Santa Maria, the CACKLING GOOSE and the ROSS'S GOOSE were
still in the front pond on the 30th.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
