Shore and wading birds from the north arrived in fairly good variety in the Calgary
birding area over the weekend. Species seen by Terry Korolyk over the weekend
included STILT, BAIRD'S, SEMIPALMATED, LEAST and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and good
nuimbers of both GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS. On Saturday, July 1, Terry observed
at least 2 and probably as many as 5 LEAST SANDPIPERS along with 3 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS and both GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS at the Tschetter Hutterite Colony
on RR 260 just north of Twp Rd 270 in the Irricana Sloughs. At a small slough on
the north side of Twp Rd 264, just west of RR 253, Terry observed 5 breeding
plumaged STILT SANDPIPERS, a single BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and 3 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS. On Sunday, July 2, Terry Korolyk watched 2 breeding plumaged STILT
SANDPIPERS and approximately 30 - 40 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 100 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in
wetlands along RR 260 and Twp Rd 182 north of Ensign. Terry also saw 3 BLACK-NECKED
STILTS at this location. On July 1, he reported 1 BLACK-NECKED STILT just east of
the tracks at the Hamlet of Shepard on 84 St east of Calgary. He observed another
BLACK-NECKED STILT on RR 283 just south of Glenmore Trail, then another at a large
slough on Twp Rd 273 just east of Hwy 9 east of Irricana. Terry Korolyk observed 2
AMERICAN BITTERNS over the weekend; one bird was on the south side of a large slough
just east of RR 261 on Twp Rd 270 east of Irricana on July 1. The other bird was
seen July 2 on Twp Rd 140 under 2 kms west of Clear Lake which is 15 kms east of
Stavely. Terry reported the adult TRUMPETER SWAN he saw at the north end of Clear
Lake June 24 was still there on July 2.
Jody Allair has reported that as many as 5 TURKEY VULTURES have been seen around the
Tyrrell Museum at Drumheller.
