Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was recorded on
Thursday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. To report a bird sighting, leave a message after the
recording, or to bypass the recorded message, press the pound key on your touch tone
phone. To speak to a naturalist, please phone 311 if calling locally during office
hours and ask for Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, or dial 403-268-2489 if calling from
outside the city.

A LEAST TERN was seen by a few observers just southeast of Calgary on Tuesday, July
4. The bird was an adult; it was seen at Policeman Flats on the Bow River. To
reach Policeman Flats take Macleod Trail and travel about 7 km south of Hwy 22X and
turn left on Dunbow Road. Proceed east on Dunbow Road to 40th St, turn left and
follow the road down to the river. The bird was found by Nimali Seneviratne at
about 3:00 PM as it rested and foraged in the open marshy area along the river at
the end of 40th St. The bird was seen by a few observers until around 9:00 PM on
July 4. Many observers visited the location on Wednesday, July 5, but the bird was
not present on this day. This should be Alberta's first official record of the
species. Previous reports included a possible bird on the Bow River in Medicine Hat
in the summer of 2004.

Observers can be on the lookout now for shore and wading birds arriving in our area
from the north. Species already seen to this point include STILT, BAIRD'S,
SEMIPALMATED, LEAST and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Good
locations reported thus far include a series of wetlands on RR 260 & Twp Rd 182 in
the Ensign area and shallow sloughs and seasonal ponds on Twp Rd 264 between Hwy 9
and RR 253 in the Irricana Sloughs.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, July 10.
