This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored
by Birdwatcher's Country Store located at the Orange Street
Travel Center on Orange Street at the Orange Street Exit off
Interstate 90 in Missoula recorded Friday July 7, 2006.
There are some rare birds for Montana right now with (if my
figures are correct) the 4th sightings of BLUE GROSBEAK,
8th sighting of WHITE-WINGED DOVE, 10TH sightings of
LESSER GOLDFINCH, and 12th sighting of BLACK-THROATED
BLUE WARBLER. And consider this, before this year there were
only 17 reported sightings of DICKCISSEL - at the present time
there have been over 33 sightings in May and June in Eastern
Montana.
A male BLUE GROSBEAK was found June 24th by Rick and
Starr Stevens on the Pryor Mountain Rd 2.9 miles from the
turnoff on highway 310 just south of Bridger. July 3rd Jeff
Marks saw the male copulating with a female BLUE GROS-
BEAK for a breeding record and they were still present July 6th.
(Look on the wires near a small pond on the right.)
June 23rd Jim Rogers and friends found a singing BLACK-
THROATED BLUE WARBLER in the Pryor Mountains.
From Bridger go east on Pryor Mountain Road about 20
miles to the turn off to Crooked Creek and turn right.
Continue down Crooked Creek 4.1 miles until you see the sign
for Wyoming Creek and park there. The bird has been singing
about 150 yards further down the road. It was last reported
July 6th.
While leaving Bridger for either of those birds keep your eye open
for DICKCISSELS along the road. Other locations reported recently
were between Ryegate and Rapelje at the intersection of Big Coulee
and West Coulee Roads and another was about 300 yards before
the parking lot at Pompey's Pillar. Still another was just east of
Billings June 24th 100 yards north on Roundup Road where
Roundup Road leaves Main Street in the heights.
There are at least 3 LESSER GOLDFINCHES west of the airport
at Billings. Go west on Hiway 3 about a mile and turn right on
Rod and Gun Club Rd. Take the first left onto Iron Horse Trail
and follow it to the parking area by the small log building. At the
entrance to the parking area there is a trail going down into the
box canyon and a short hike takes you into the area to look for
the Lesser Goldfinches. Jim Burman also reported a LESSER
GOLDFINCH in his yard about 20 miles south of Cascade
June 14th.
June 27th John Carlson heard a WHITE-WINGED DOVE in his
yard at Ft. Peck and the bird was still present as of June 30th.
I don't have a further update on this.
July 1st Chuck Carlson found 8 PIPING PLOVERS on an island
in the AF Pump Dredge Cut on the Missouri River near Ft. Peck.
Dave Williams found a SNOWY EGRET at Benton Lake on June
24th - Alan Nelson said it was still present July 1st.
Mike Lesnick reported that after the Glasgow Feather Fest
he went to the Long Pines area east of Ekalaka and found a
pair of LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS on about June 7th.
Wayne Tree reported a GREAT EGRET at Lee Metcalf NWR
near Stevensville on June 14th.
June 20th Betty Anderson and Georgia Frazier found a PALM
WARBLER singing between Zortman and the Camp Creek
Campground in the Little Rockies south of Malta.
And last both Wayne Tree in the Bitterroot and Mike Schwitters
from Freezout WMA near Choteau reported returning shorebirds
so check those shorelines.
