This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for July 6, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornith-ological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights: Arctic Tern,
Mountain Plovers, Mourning Warbler, Short-ered Owl, Dusky-capped Flycatcher.
Cassin’s Sparrows seem to be in good numbers this summer.
Some areas have increased fire restrictions due to the drought. Word comes
that there are closures in the Cibola Forest, and in the others there are
restrictions. In the Cibola parts of the Zuni Mts., Mount Taylor area,
Sandias, Magdalenas, and northern San Mateos are closed. Parts of the Gila are
closed also, such as the road to Signal Peak. There have been recent very
welcome rains.

In Rio Arriba County:
JO on June 23 at El Rito had a CASSIN’S SPARROW south of town. By a Rio
Chama sign north of Espanola he had a single ROADRUNNER.
In Taos County:
JP and BP on July 4 had four MOUNTAIN PLOVERS in the area near Tres Piedras
on US 285 between mile posts 406 and 407 where there are gates on each side
with dirt roads (high clearance best) leading east and west. Take the east
road a half mile to where a dirt track goes off to the right. Park here and
walk the flat areas for the plovers.
JP and BP on July 3 found a singing CASSIN’S SPARROW near the Comfort Suites
Motel in Taos. There was a BUROWING OWL just west of Taos on the road to
the Rio Grande Gorge and Tres Piedras on July 4. Six more were on the west
side of US 285 at the state line.
On July 3 JP and BP had on Twining Road above the Taos Ski Village a DIPPER
near the beaver pond. Five PINE GROSBEAKS were between the Bavarian
Restaurant and Williams Lake.
CB on a WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN survey on the eastern Santa Barbara Ridge of
the Sangre de Cristos on June 12 to 14 recorded several. They have been in
the area of Jicarita Peak. It is a long climb up to the ridge. See page 70
of the NM BFG.
In Sandoval County:
JP and BP on July 1 had ten BLACK SWIFTS and a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER at the
Jemez Falls west of Los Alamos off NM 4. Many RED CROSSBILLS were in the
Jemez Mountains.
In Los Alamos County:
JP and BP on July 1 on the road to the Los Alamos Ski Area recorded a LEWIS’
S WOODPECKER.
In Santa Fe County:
PV on July 1 at the Santa Fe Ski Basin saw a pair of PINE GROSBEAKS. JP and
BP saw three or four on July 3.
MR, DE, and TT on June 29 in the Caja del Rio near Santa Fe had 35 singing
CASSIN’S SPARROWS, a ROADRUNNER, four BLACK-THROATED SPARROWS, and nine
CURVE-BILLED THRASHERS.
WW on June 16 found two MOUNTAIN PLOVERS near Stanley. They were off of
Hwy. 41 on Co. 16A south of town about a half mile from 41 on the south side of
the road. JP and BP on July 1 did not find the plovers, but had some CASSIN’
S SPARROWS and an EASTERN MEADOWLARK.
In San Miguel County:
JSt and MW on June 23 found two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in a cottonwood grove
at the junction of I-25 and hwy. C24 east of Romeroville.
BW on the road up to Elk Mountain from NM 63 in Pecos Canyon found on June
20 four PURPLE MARTINS.
At the Clabber Hill Ranch adjacent to Conchas Lake one or two calling BLACK
RAILS have been found. No reports since June 3. The ranch is private; for
permission to bird call Tony Gabel at 868-3351.
Earlier the telescope at the Crane Lake Overlook was stolen! The Las Vegas
Refuge is hoping to get a new one for $4000. Please send donations to the
refuge at RR 1, Box 399, Las Vegas, 87701.
In Colfax County:
DC on June 28 in Yankee at the Yankee Canyon turnoff saw three LEWIS’S
WOODPCKERS with a male INDIGO BUNTING close to the highway.
At Sugarite State Park near Raton DC had another Lewis’s , a CATBIRD, and
two TREE SWALLOWS. DEl on June 2 in the park at the last picnic area before
the Lake Molya dam recorded a singing MOURNING WARBLER.
CR on June 24 had two pairs of DUSKY FLYCATCHERS on the eastern slope of
Johnson Mesa east of Raton.
At Miami Lake on July 1 DC found a COMMON LOON.
DC on July 2 saw again the two DICKCISSELS on NM 505 between mile posts 1
and 2.
At Springer Lake DC had on July 1 three GREATER YELLOWLEGS, four AVOCETS,
two WILSON’S PHALAROPES, and 15 WHITE PELICANS. In Springer there was a BLACK
PHOEBE at the Cimarron Rio Bridge on NM 21.
At Eagle Nest Lake on July 1 DC had 20 CALIFORNIA GULLS, 30 COMMON
MERGANSERS, a late SNOW GOOSE, and WESTERN GREBES. There was a BLACK PHOEBE at the
river bridge in Cimarron.
DC had two ROADRUNNERS on hwy. A7 east of the Dorsey Mansion towards NM 193.
BPo had a SHORT-EARED OWL at the Maxwell Refuge on July 3 near the east end
of the East Refuge Road.
At Stubblefield/Laguna Madre lakes on June 27 DC found a MARBLED GODWIT, a
LONG-BILLED CURLEW, and 27 AVOCETS with WESTERN and CLARK’S GREBES.
In Union county:
CR on June 25 in the area of Granville had around 18 MOUNTAIN PLOVERS, most
in the first five miles south of town.
HSc reported good numbers of CASSIN’S SPARROWS in their traditional home at
Perico Creek near Clayton.
In Cibola County:
AM on June 30 had a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER in Bluewater Village.
CJG at the El Morro NM had two PURPLE MARTINS flying over on June 25. At
the Ice Caves on NM 53 on June 24 therE were many PINYON JAYS, a CLARK’S
NUTCRACKER, and a small flock of RED CROSSBILLS.
CJG on June 24 had a pair of SCALED QUAIL with eight young in Grants. At
the Chamber of Commerce on June 30 he had a BLACK PHOEBE.
He heard an EASTERN MEADOWLARK singing June 15 at the Zuni-Acoma Trailhead
on NM 53 in the El Malpais NM. He had one there on June 28 with three
BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS, PINYON JAYS, and RED CROSSBILLS. An ACORN WOODPECKER flew
over.
Some roads in the Zuni range have been closed; and areas in the28 Malpais
NM are also restricted. The road up Bluewater Canyon is closed.
In Bernalillo County:
DD had two LONG-EARED OWLS on June 23-24 at his home off NM 337 (old 14)
south of Tijeras.
KB reported the ACORN WOODPECKER was again at her home south of Tijeras in
the Manzanita Mts. on June 25 and 26.
RR reported BURROWING OWLS by the runways of the Albuquerque Airport.
In Valencia County:
MaW on June 29 reported a MISSISSIPPI KITE at the park at the Rio Grande in
Los Lunas. There were two WILSON’S PHALAROPES on the ponds at the Taco Bell
in Belen.
In Torrance County:
TH on June 24 (but not June 25) after a two-year absence had a male ACORN
WOODPECKER at his home in the Manzano Mts. 11 miles northwest of Mountainair.
In Socorro County:
JO on June 26 reported a singing CASSIN’S SPARROW in a field a quarter mile
from his home in Luis Lopez south of Socorro. He had an AUDUBON’S WARBLER on
June 26.
SM reports that Water Canyon, the Magdalena Mts, and the northern San Mateo
Mts. are closed. Springtime Canyon in the southern San Mateos is still open.
RR on May 26 had a GRAY VIREO in the Box Canyon area west Socorro. On US 60
at mile post 131.5 go north on a dirt road past the climbing cliffs and rest
house into the pinyons on the hill.
In Chaves County:
GW on Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell on June 21 had a pair of MOORHENS on
Unit 15 with four chicks. The LEAST BITTERN is still calling there.
In Sierra County:
JSt on June 28 found a male BRONZED COWBIRD at the Paseo del Rio Park below
the Elephant Butte Lake dam.
In Catron County:
THu had a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT at the Glenwood Fish Hatchery on June
26-27. MC reported a DIPPER nest at the Whitewater Canyon Catwalk.
In Grant County:
JP, WW, and HS on June 23 on Burro Peak south of Silver City had two OLIVE
WARBLERS and one adult YELLOW-EYED JUNCO with a young bird. DB reported that
RS (date?) had at Jack’s Peak in the Burros the junco and another
DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER.
MF at the Gila Bird Farm on June 13 had a DICKCISSEL. EW still saw it
singing on June 20. DAZ photographed it. Both MF and EW have had singing CASSIN’
S SPARROWS in the area.
EW reports hummingbirds in greater than usual numbers at her feedera near
the Gila Bird Farm by June 22. At the Greyfeathers Lodge near Roberts Lake the
first male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was seen on June 26.
The road up to Signal Peak in the Pinos Altos has been closed.
JP, WW, and HS On June 23 had a calling SPOTTED OWL on NM 15 at mile marker
14 near the McMillan CG. One or two DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHERS were singing at
the Cherry Creek Campground. It was photographed by DAZ on June 17.
DB rep orts that PY reported a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at the Gila Cliff
Dwellings (date?)
In Hidalgo County:
In the New Mexico part of Guadalupe Canyon on June 24 JP and WW had three
ZONE-TAILED HAWKS, up to five VARIED BUNTINGS, a VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRD
west of the orchard, and at the ranch two BRONZED COWBIRDS and three INCA DOVES.
In the AZ part there was a GRAY HAWK at about .7 to one mile in.
On June 25 JP and WW owled Clanton Canyon, In the lower forest part there
was one WESTERN SCREECH, one ELF, and a LONG-EARED. In the campground there
was two WHISKERED SCREECH and two WHIPPOORWILLS.
On the way to Animas on Co. 1 on June 25 there was at Dunagan’s Crossing a
ZONE-TAILED HAWK, a calling COMMON GROUND-DOVE, and a BELL’S VIREO. No sign
of the BOTTERI’S SPARROWS seen in other years.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.
In Luna County:
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for
about a year for construction.
In Dona Ana County:
CL at Swan Pond north of Radium Springs on June 23 had many singing CASSIN’S
SPARROWS.
DG on June 21 at his home northeast of Las Cruces had the COMMON GROUND-DOVE
that only shows up occasionally.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been
installed for birders to list their sightings.
At the ponds on June 27 CL and CBr saw seven BLACK TERNS and two FRANKLIN’S
GULLS.
In Eddy County:
SW on July 3 at Avalon Lake north of Carlsbad had an ARCTIC TERN, a MARBLED
GODWIT, and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS
SW on June 12 found ELF OWLS in Last Chance Canyon of the Guadalupe Mts.
near Carlsbad.
DG had at least three singing GRAY VIREOS in Walnut Canyon of the Carlsbad
Caverns NP on June 19. He had a calling BROWN THRASHER also.
