Feature Birds

AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER
SOOTY and DUSKY GROUSE
Saturday, July 8
RARE BIRD ALERT: An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was at Esquimalt Lagoon in front
of Royal Roads University in Colwood. While the bird was subsequently seen
leaving the lagoon, it may return here later in the day, and birders should
be on the lookout for this bird anywhere along the waterfront as well as
locales such as Elk/Beaver Lake.
A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was observed at Witty's Lagoon Regional Park in
Metchosin.
Friday, July 7
No reports.
Thursday, July 6
The Chatham and Discovery Islands off Oak Bay produced good numbers and
variety of shorebirds, including BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS. 3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were
reported at Clover Point along the Victoria waterfront as well.
A BLUE-WINGED TEAL continued at Rithet's Bog off Chatterton Way.
In taxonomy news, the American Ornithologist's Union has released its latest
North American checklist supplement. Among some taxonomic order changes and
other additions and changes to the list, birders should note that one local
species has been affected. Namely, Blue Grouse has been split in two - our
local species is now referred to as SOOTY GROUSE (the other interior and
southern representative is now called DUSKY GROUSE).
Wednesday, July 5
A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was among other peeps at Witty's Lagoon.
Tuesday, July 4
RARE BIRD ALERT: A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was on the west side of Rithet's Bog
along the chip trail that parallels Chatterton Way. The bird was heard and
seen in the "island" of thick vegetation just east of the trail. This
represents only the third record for the Victoria checklist.
Also present at Rithet's was a GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and later a BLUE-WINGED
TEAL, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, and a VAUX'S SWIFT were present.
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT-of-TOWN): A BLACK PHOEBE was in Osoyoos in the Okanagan
at 7003 Nighthawk Road.
Locally, a VIRGINIA RAIL was at Viaduct Flats off Interurban Road in
Saanich.
