Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was recorded on
Monday, July 10 at 10:10 a.m. To report a bird sighting, leave a message after the
recording, or to bypass the recorded message, press the pound key on your touch tone
phone. To speak to a naturalist, please phone 311 if calling locally during office
hours and ask for Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, or dial 403-268-2489 if calling from
outside the city.

A VIRGINIA RAIL has been reported at the Cave and Basin Marsh in Banff National
Park. The bird was heard calling there on Saturday, July 8, from the rushes below
the telescope in the viewing area. The bird was heard calling by Jerry Pilny and
Alan Fishkin. This is the only report of the species in our area thus far this
year. It is on occasion reported at the Cave and Basin Marsh. The only report of
the species from our area in 2005 was a bird in the Springbank area in NW Calgary.

The have been no further reports on the adult LEAST TERN since Tuesday, July 4, when
it was discovered in the marshy area at Policeman Flats along the Bow River just SE
of Calgary. It was found by Nimiali Seneviratne at 3:00 PM on July 4 and was
subsequently seen by only a few observers until 9:00 PM that day. The bird was
photographed; it will probably be Alberta's first official record of the species in
the province. Policeman Flats is at the end of 40 St off Dunbow Road which runs
eastward from Hwy 2 just south of Calgary.

There were only sparse numbers of GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the Strathmore
area on Sunday, July 9. However Terrry Korolyk observed a flock of 6 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS at a small pond on the east side of RR 243 just north of Hwy 1 east of
Strathmore.

An adult PEREGRINE FALCON was at an unusual location on Sunday, July 9, when it was
seen by Terry Korolyk in strong winds at Weed Lake along Hwy 560 just east of
Langdon. On Friday, July 7, Terry observed a female WOOD DUCK with 3 young near
the stormwater outfall on the Bow River between Burnsmead and Hull's Wood in east
Fish Creek PP in Calgary.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, July 13.
