Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, July 13, 2006.
CENTRE COUNTY:
Birds seen in the Mt. Nittany Conservancy area on July 9 included DOWNY
WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER,
EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, BLUE JAY, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, TUFTED TITMOUSE,
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, WOOD THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN and SCARLET TANAGER
(NB).
The Oak Hall area produced TURKEY VULTURE, BELTED KINGFISHER, EASTERN
PHOEBE, BARN SWALLOW, CAROLINA WREN, AMERICAN ROBIN, YELLOW WARBLER,
FIELD SPARROW, SONG SPARROW and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH on July 9 (NB).
RED-TAILED HAWK, EASTERN KINGBIRD, AMERICAN CROW, BARN SWALLOW, SAVANNAH
SPARROW and HOUSE SPARROW were found along Brush Valley and some side
roads on July 9 (NB).
Cedar Run Road yielded MOURNING DOVE, TREE SWALLOW, CLIFF SWALLOW,
AMERICAN ROBIN, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, CEDAR WAXWING, CHIPPING
SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW and NORTHERN CARDINAL on July 9
(NB).
Bald Eagle State Park produced 2 immature BALD EAGLES and 4 COMMON LOONS
last week (BS).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Birds found along Milesburn Road on July 8 included 2 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, HERMIT THRUSH, BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, WORM-EATING WARBLER, OVENBIRD, LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, HOODED WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER
(AM).
There were CANADA GOOSE, MALLARD, GREEN HERON, BLACK VULTURE, TURKEY
VULTURE, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 7 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, ROCK PIGEON, 1 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, MOURNING DOVE, CHIMNEY
SWIFT, BELTED KINGFISHER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER,
EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, EASTERN PHOEBE, EASTERN KINGBIRD, AMERICAN CROW,
FISH CROW, TREE SWALLOW, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW,
CHICKADEE sp., TUFTED TITMOUSE, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, EASTERN
BLUEBIRD, WOOD THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN, EUROPEAN STARLING, YELLOW
WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, SCARLET TANAGER, CHIPPING SPARROW, 5 FIELD
SPARROWS, 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 50 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, 25 SONG
SPARROWS, 1 BLUE GROSBEAK, INDIGO BUNTING, 7 DICKCISSELS, 15 EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS, COMMON GRACKLE, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD and HOUSE SPARROW
along PA Route 997 just south of McCrea between July 7 and 12 (VG, AM).
A flooded field along Fogelsanger Road behind Shippensburg University
yielded 2 MALLARDS, 2 KILLDEER, 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and 16 LEAST
SANDPIPERS on July 10 (AM).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A GREAT EGRET was observed along Swatara Creek near Hummelstown on July
10 (DK).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
Three BLUE GROSBEAKS were found along Rocky Spring Road north of
Chambersburg on July 6 (DG, BK). Directions: Take I-81 to the Scotland
Exit. From there take PA 997 north across Route 11 to Letterkenny gate 6
at the traffic light. Turn left off of Route 997 onto Coffey Avenue. Go
1.7 miles on Coffey Avenue to Salem Road. Turn right onto Salem Road and
go a short distance past two Salem Churches to a T. Turn right at the T
and then make a quick left onto Funk Road. Take Funk Road 1.4 miles to
Rocky Spring Road. Turn right onto Rocky Spring Road and go 0.2 miles to
a bend in the road where there is a "No Dumping" sign and pull off the
road. Do not block the farm lane that is there. The BLUE GROSBEAKS were
seen in trees along the road at the bend and feeding in the hay and
cornfield on either side of the road.
Birds found at Letterkenny Lake on July 10 included CANADA GOOSE,
MALLARD, 1 COMMON LOON, GREAT BLUE HERON, GREEN HERON, BLACK VULTURE,
TURKEY VULTURE, 2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, RED-TAILED
HAWK, ROCK PIGEON, MOURNING DOVE, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, DOWNY
WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, EASTERN PHOEBE,
EASTERN KINGBIRD, RED-EYED VIREO, BLUE JAY, AMERICAN CROW, FISH CROW,
TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, CHICKADEE sp., TUFTED TITMOUSE, CAROLINA
WREN, HOUSE WREN, WOOD THRUSH, AMERICAN ROBIN, GRAY CATBIRD, NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD, EUROPEAN STARLING, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, SCARLET TANAGER,
CHIPPING SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, NORTHERN CARDINAL, INDIGO BUNTING,
EASTERN MEADOWLARK, COMMON GRACKLE, HOUSE FINCH, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and
HOUSE SPARROW (AM).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
A BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK continues to be seen at Alcoa Marsh
through at least July 6 (JF).
A kayak trip around Lake Aldred on July 8 found 1 SNOW GOOSE, 24 CANADA
GEESE, 6 immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 1
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH (TR).
LANCASTER/CHESTER COUNTY:
Birds seen in breeding bird atlas block 93A33 on July 6 included
RED-TAILED HAWK, KILLDEER, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, DOWNY WOODPECKER,
NORTHERN FLICKER, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, RED-EYED VIREO,
BLUE JAY, HORNED LARK, PURPLE MARTIN, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, GRAY CATBIRD,
CEDAR WAXWING, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, SAVANNAH SPARROW, INDIGO BUNTING,
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD and HOUSE FINCH (PF).
MCKEAN AND POTTER COUNTIES:
Birds seen during a breeding bird atlas trip to these counties last week
included OSPREY, WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, MAGNOLIA WARBLER,
MOURNING WARBLER, SWAMP SPARROW and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (AW).
MIFFLIN COUNTY:
A female NORTHERN HARRIER was observed catching something in a field
near Belleville on July 8 (JZ).
YORK COUNTY:
At least 6 PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were found on the eastern side of Weise
Island and Bair Islands on July 8 (TR).
