Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
On Saturday, July 8, Jim Pike reported the continuing BROAD-TAILED
HUMMINGBIRD 200 yards downstream from the creek crossing at Aspen Grove in
the San Bernardino Mountains. He also reported a PEREGRINE FALCON in the
Fish Creek area. He belatedly reported a NUTTALL’S WOODPECKER two weeks
earlier from the Aspen Grove trailhead, just over 7,000’ elevation.
On Sunday, July 9, Howard King reported 10 RED CROSSBILLS including
begging juveniles at Bluff Lake. AT the sewage treatment plant at Baldwin
Lake he reported an over-summering RING-NECKED DUCK. BLACK SWIFTS were
seen in the Monkey Face Falls area in Mill Creek Canyon.
On Monday, July 10, Dave Goodward reported from the Green Canyon area in
the San Bernardinos. He reported typical species plus a “WESTERN”
FLYCATCHER at lower Green Canyon, either a local breeder or an early
migrant. Birds of note reported on the first two miles of the trail were
RED CROSSBILLS, TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE, MACGILLIVRAY’S WARBLER, as well as
more common flycatchers. At the 3 mile mark he heard HERMIT THRUSH and
saw a family of WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKERS.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
On July 6, Chet McGaugh reported from San Jacinto Wildlife Area. A female
NORTHERN SHOVELER was a seasonal rarity. His highlight was twenty WHITE-
TAILED KITES, with twelve in the same tree including juveniles. He
reported that flock mingling aerially with a flock of CASPIAN TERNS.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Guy McCaskie reported from the south end of the Salton Sea on Friday, July
7. He reported impressive numbers of expected shorebirds. Birds of
particular interest are: SOLITARY SANDPIPER (1 - establishing the
earliest date for a fall migrant at the Salton Sea), SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER (1 – a worn alternate-plumage adult), and the summering LITTLE
GULL was still present.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
