Recent very welcome monsoon rains have caused all the forest areas to be
re-opened. There are still fire restrictions.

In Taos County:
JP and BP on July 4 had four MOUNTAIN PLOVERS in the area near Tres Piedras
on US 285 between mile posts 406 and 407 where there are gates on each side
with dirt roads (high clearance best) leading east and west. Take the east
road a half mile to where a dirt track goes off to the right. Park here and
walk the flat areas for the plovers.
JP and BP on July 3 found a singing CASSIN’S SPARROW near the Comfort Suites
Motel in Taos. There was a BUROWING OWL just west of Taos on the road to
the Rio Grande Gorge and Tres Piedras on July 4. Six more were on the west
side of US 285 at the state line.
On July 3 JP and BP had on Twining Road above the Taos Ski Village a DIPPER
near the beaver pond.
CB did a WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN survey on the eastern Santa Barbara Ridge of
the Sangre de Cristos. They have been in the area of Jicarita Peak. It is
a long climb up to the ridge. See page 70 of the NM BFG.
In Sandoval County:
JR and DK on July 10 had an adult MISSISSIPPI KITE flying over Corrales at
Casa San Isidro on Old Church Road. She also reported there on Wesr Ella two
BURROWING OWLS with a colony of BANK SWALLOWS in an arroyo at the west end of
Mission Ridge Road.
BV on July 9 had two BLACK SWIFTS and a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER at the Jemez
Falls west of Los Alamos off NM 4. CW saw five the same day.
DB on July 9 had one three-toed woodpecker at the old Dome Burn site on FR
289 off NM 4. Many RED CROSSBILLS have been in the Jemez Mountains.
In Los Alamos County:
DB saw four THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS at the Apache Springs area of the
Bandelier NM on July 9. Across Hwy. 4 is a road at American Springs he found
another woodpecker. This is part of the Santa Fe NF.
JP and BP on July 1 on the road to the Los Alamos Ski Area recorded a LEWIS’
S WOODPECKER.
In Santa Fe County:
JP and BP on July 1 near Stanley found some CASSIN’S SPARROWS and an EASTERN
MEADOWLARK.
In San Miguel County:
BW on the road up to Elk Mountain from NM 63 in Pecos Canyon on July 5 saw
two PURPLE MARTINS, four CASSIN’S FINCHCHES, and a PINE GROSBEAK. There were
a few adult male RUF0OUS HUMMINGBIRDS at the store feeders in Terero in the
canyon.
Earlier the telescope at the Crane Lake Overlook was stolen! The Las Vegas
Refuge hopes to get a new one for $4000. Please send donations to the refuge

In Colfax County:
DC on July 9 in Yankee at the Yankee Canyon turnoff saw four LEWIS’S
WOODPCKERS.
At Sugarite State Park near Raton on July 9 BN, CR, and RV had a CATBIRD and
three ACORN WOODPECKERS. CR and RV found a singing OVENBIRD. DC on July 9
had four TREE SWALLOWS on Lake Maloya with four ACORN WOODPECKERS at Lake
Alice on July 12. At the Soda Pocket Campground on July 12 there was a DUSKY
FLYCATCHER and a GOSHAWK for DC.
At Miami Lake on July 10 DC found a COMMON LOON. On NM 21 at mile marker 15
west of the lake there were a LEIS’S WOODPECKER and two CATBIRDS..
DC on July 2 saw again the two DICKCISSELS on NM 505 between mile posts 1
and 2.
At Springer Lake DC had on July 9 five FORSTER’S TERNS. In Springer there
was a BLACK PHOEBE at the Cimarron Rio Bridge on NM 21 ON July 1.
At Eagle Nest Lake on July 1 DC had 20 CALIFORNIA GULLS, 30 COMMON
MERGANSERS, a late SNOW GOOSE, and WESTERN GREBES. There was a BLACK PHOEBE at the
river bridge in Cimarron.
At Stubblefield/Laguna Madre Lakes on June 27 DC found 27 AVOCETS with
WESTERN and CLARK’S GREBES.
In Union county:
CR on June 25 in the area of Granville had around 18 MOUNTAIN PLOVERS, most
in the first five miles south of town.
In Cibola County:
CJG at the El Morro NM on july 9 had RUFFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS at his feeder with
a SPOTTED SANDPIPER at the park sewage ponds.
AM on June 30 had a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER in Bluewater Village.
CJG at the Ice Caves on NM 53 on June 24 reported many PINYON JAYS and a
small flock of RED CROSSBILLS.
CJG at the Chamber of Commerce in Grants on June 30 had a BLACK PHOEBE.
He heard an EASTERN MEADOWLARK singing at the Zuni-Acoma Trailhead on NM 53
in the El Malpais NM. He had one there on June 28 with three BLACK-CHINNED
SPARROWS. An ACORN WOODPECKER flew over.
In Bernalillo County:
CW on July 9 saw two BURROWING OWLS on the north side of Tramway Road just
east of theSandia Casino.
KB reported the ACORN WOODPECKER was again at her home south of Tijeras in
the Manzanita Mts. on June 26.
In Valencia County:
MH and CW on July 11 at the Taco Bell Marsh in Belen saw a WESTERN SANDPIPER
and a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER.
MaW on June 29 reported a MISSISSIPPI KITE at the park at the Rio Grande in
Los Luna.
In Socorro County:
JP and BP on July 9 saw two FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCKS on the north side of the
two-way middle road at the east end. They were seen by BN,CR, and RV later
in the day, but not since. MH, SW, and CW on July 11 had a MARBLED GODWIT at
that site.
JO on June 26 reported a singing CASSIN’S SPARROW in a field a quarter mile
from his home in Luis Lopez south of Socorro.
RR had a GRAY VIREO in the Box Canyon area west Socorro. On US 60 at mile
post 131.5 go north on a dirt road past the climbing cliffs and rest house
into the pinyons on the hill.
In Chaves County:
GW on Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell had a pair of MOORHENS on Unit 15 with
four chicks. The LEAST BITTERN is still calling there.
In Lincoln County:
CBr on July 9 at a campground at the Bonito Canyon Trailhead on NM 107 north
of Ruidoso had a calling SPOTTED OWL.
In Catron County:
MC reported a DIPPER nest at the Whitewater Canyon Catwalk.
In Grant County:
JP, WW, and HS on June 23 on Burro Peak south of Silver City had two OLIVE
WARBLERS and one adult YELLOW-EYED JUNCO with a young bird. CL on nearby Jack’
s Peak in the Big Burros had on July 7 three of the juncos, a DUSKY-CAPPED
FLYCATCHER, and an OLIVE WARBLER. They were all within .3 of a mile from the
top.
At the Gila Bird Farm MF and EW have had singing CASSIN’S SPARROWS in the
area.
JP, WW, and HS On June 23 had a calling SPOTTED OWL on NM 15 at mile marker
14 near the McMillan CG. One or two DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHERS were singing at
the Cherry Creek Campground. It was photographed by DAZ on June 17.
In Hidalgo County:
RH re-found an adult male BLACK-CAPPED GNATCATCHER in the New Mexico part of
Guadalupe Canyon on July 9 at the 13th stream crossing 3.5 miles from the
entrance gate. (one must walk in). He also reported two GRAY HAWKS in the NM
part with VARIED BUNTING. At the present time the stream is dry, bu that may
change. The canyon may not be entirely safe if it is flooding. in the New
Mexico part on June 24 JP and WW had three ZONE-TAILED HAWKS, up to five
VARIED BUNTINGS, and a VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRD west of the orchard. RH did
not find the hummer on July 9.
JP on July 8 reported a WHITE-TAILED KITE on US 80 south of Rodeo.
On June 25 JP and WW owled Clanton Canyon, In the lower forest part there
was one WESTERN SCREECH, one ELF, and a LONG-EARED. In the campground there
was two WHISKERED SCREECH and two WHIPPOORWILLS.
On the way to Animas on Co. 1 on June 25 there was at Dunagan’s Crossing a
calling COMMON GROUND-DOVE and a BELL’S VIREO.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because of
events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction.
In Dona Ana County:
CBr July 7 saw a WHITE PELICAN flying over Organ east of Las Cruces on US 70.
JZ and MS on July 5 at their home near Radium Spring had a male CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRD with a male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD on July 7.
CL at Swan Pond north of Radium Springs on June 23 had many singing CASSIN’S
SPARROWS.
DG on July at his home northeast of Las Cruces had the COMMON GROUND-DOVE
begin to appear more often. He had a RUFOUS HUMMER on July 7 to 9 and a male
CALLIOPE July 8-9. Three pairs of BURROWING OWLS are east of his home.
In Otero County:
CBr on July 7 at the Holloman Lakes saw a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a VIRGINIA’S
WARBLER, and 200 each of AVOCETS and BLACK-NECKED STILTS.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
At Avalon Lake north of Carlsbad RD on July 5 saw a LAUGHING GULL and a
WHITE PELICAN.
At Brantley Lake on uly 5 RD saw seven AVOCETS.
SW on June 12 found ELF OWLS in Last Chance Canyon of the Guadalupe Mts.
near Carlsbad.
DG had at least three singing GRAY VIREOS in Walnut Canyon of the Carlsbad
Caverns NP on June 19.
In Lea County:
RC had a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Hobbs on July 7.

CW on July 9 saw two BURROWING OWLS on the north side of Tramway Road just
east of theSandia Casino.
KB reported the ACORN WOODPECKER was again at her home south of Tijeras in
the Manzanita Mts. on June 26.
In Valencia County:
MH and CW on July 11 at the Taco Bell Marsh in Belen saw a WESTERN SANDPIPER
and a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER.
MaW on June 29 reported a MISSISSIPPI KITE at the park at the Rio Grande in
Los Luna.
In Socorro County:
JP and BP on July 9 saw two FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCKS on the north side of the
two-way middle road at the east end. They were seen by BN,CR, and RV later
in the day, but not since. MH, SW, and CW on July 11 had a MARBLED GODWIT at
that site.
JO on June 26 reported a singing CASSIN’S SPARROW in a field a quarter mile
from his home in Luis Lopez south of Socorro.
RR had a GRAY VIREO in the Box Canyon area west Socorro. On US 60 at mile
post 131.5 go north on a dirt road past the climbing cliffs and rest house
into the pinyons on the hill.
In Chaves County:
GW on Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell had a pair of MOORHENS on Unit 15 with
four chicks. The LEAST BITTERN is still calling there.
In Lincoln County:
CBr on July 9 at a campground at the Bonito Canyon Trailhead on NM 107 north
of Ruidoso had a calling SPOTTED OWL.
In Catron County:
MC reported a DIPPER nest at the Whitewater Canyon Catwalk.
In Grant County:
JP, WW, and HS on June 23 on Burro Peak south of Silver City had two OLIVE
WARBLERS and one adult YELLOW-EYED JUNCO with a young bird. CL on nearby Jack’
s Peak in the Big Burros had on July 7 three of the juncos, a DUSKY-CAPPED
FLYCATCHER, and an OLIVE WARBLER. They were all within .3 of a mile from the
top.
At the Gila Bird Farm MF and EW have had singing CASSIN’S SPARROWS in the
area.
JP, WW, and HS On June 23 had a calling SPOTTED OWL on NM 15 at mile marker
14 near the McMillan CG. One or two DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHERS were singing at
the Cherry Creek Campground. It was photographed by DAZ on June 17.
In Hidalgo County:
RH re-found an adult male BLACK-CAPPED GNATCATCHER in the New Mexico part of
Guadalupe Canyon on July 9 at the 13th stream crossing 3.5 miles from the
entrance gate. (one must walk in). He also reported two GRAY HAWKS in the NM
part with VARIED BUNTING. At the present time the stream is dry, bu that may
change. The canyon may not be entirely safe if it is flooding. in the New
Mexico part on June 24 JP and WW had three ZONE-TAILED HAWKS, up to five
VARIED BUNTINGS, and a VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRD west of the orchard. RH did
not find the hummer on July 9.
JP on July 8 reported a WHITE-TAILED KITE on US 80 south of Rodeo.
On June 25 JP and WW owled Clanton Canyon, In the lower forest part there
was one WESTERN SCREECH, one ELF, and a LONG-EARED. In the campground there
was two WHISKERED SCREECH and two WHIPPOORWILLS.
On the way to Animas on Co. 1 on June 25 there was at Dunagan’s Crossing a
calling COMMON GROUND-DOVE and a BELL’S VIREO.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because of
events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction.
In Dona Ana County:
CBr July 7 saw a WHITE PELICAN flying over Organ east of Las Cruces on US 70.
JZ and MS on July 5 at their home near Radium Spring had a male CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRD with a male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD on July 7.
CL at Swan Pond north of Radium Springs on June 23 had many singing CASSIN’S
SPARROWS.
DG on July at his home northeast of Las Cruces had the COMMON GROUND-DOVE
begin to appear more often. He had a RUFOUS HUMMER on July 7 to 9 and a male
CALLIOPE July 8-9. Three pairs of BURROWING OWLS are east of his home.
In Otero County:
CBr on July 7 at the Holloman Lakes saw a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a VIRGINIA’S
WARBLER, and 200 each of AVOCETS and BLACK-NECKED STILTS.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
At Avalon Lake north of Carlsbad RD on July 5 saw a LAUGHING GULL and a
WHITE PELICAN.
At Brantley Lake on uly 5 RD saw seven AVOCETS.
SW on June 12 found ELF OWLS in Last Chance Canyon of the Guadalupe Mts.
near Carlsbad.
DG had at least three singing GRAY VIREOS in Walnut Canyon of the Carlsbad
Caverns NP on June 19.
In Lea County:
RC had a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Hobbs on July 7.
