Weather Summary: High pressure dominated most of the
week, with seasonably warm temps and abundant sunshine
for the weekend, but with heat and humidity increasing
by Mon. An upper level low produced showers and
thunderstorms, including some severe storms and heavy
rain on Tues., while another low Wed. afternoon
through Thurs. morning produced more significant and
widespread rains.
The **BRIDLED TERN,** a second state record, continues
on Outer Green Island, at least through Tuesday, 7/11.
A pair of lingering LONG-TAILED DUCKS continue there
as well, and on the 6th, a PEREGRINE FALCON was
observed snatching a COMMON TERN - only to lose it to
a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL (which then dropped it into
the water due to the onslaught of 100’s of mobbing
terns!).
A drake HARLEQUIN DUCK continues off of East Point in
Biddeford Pool this week.
A whale watch out of Portland on the 8th produced a
single CORY’S SHEARWATER and 1000+ WILSON’S
STORM-PETRELS.
35 GREATER and 12 LESSER YELLOWLEGS were observed at
Wharton Point in Brunswick (Delorme Map 6: C-3) on
7/8. A WHIMBREL was reported from the Pine Point
Narrows in Scarborough Marsh on the 8th. 400+
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were tallied heading south
past Goose Rocks Beach on 7/5.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was spotted at the
intersection of Rte. 103 and Haley Rd. (Delorme Map 1:
B-4) in Kittery on the 9th.
A CAROLINA WREN was singing at Fort Foster in Kittery
on 7/9.
At least one EVENING GROSBEAK called as it passed over
South Portland’s Bug Light Park (Delorme Map 73: E-4)
on the 7th.
