A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen in a back yard in the Braeside subdivision of
Calgary on Monday, July 10. The bird was seen by Alan and Shonna McLeod in their
yard at 615 Brookpark Dr. SW at 9:00 am. This is the first summer season report of
the species in Southern Alberta. There were at least 2 spring reports, with one
bird at Kinbrook Island PP near Brooks in early to mid May, and the other bird in
the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary in late May. The species has been reported
regularly in small numbers in Southern Alberta the past 2 - 3 summers and has been
reported at Glenmore Reservoir in Calgary the previous 2 years. Glenmore Reservoir
is fairly proximate to the Braeside subdivision.

The Calgary Bird Alert has received word that an ACORN WOODPECKER may have been seen
near Sundre, Alberta. A report to that effect was filed July 10 but there are no
confirmed facts as to location, time of the sighting or identity of the observers.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, July 17.
