You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Friday July 14. The roster this week includes sightings
of BROWN PELICAN, SANDHILL CRANE, GULL-BILLED TERN, SANDWICH TERN,
BLACK TERN, SORA, PARASITIC JAEGER, and WILSON’S STORM PETRELS.
Shorebird migration is underway with more and more birds being
reported daily. Virtually every typical species was reported this
week from the Hotline coverage area. Stone Harbor Point was
reported to have good numbers of birds, though difficult to see due
to the nesting areas that are roped off. As well, it seems that
Brigantine, as always, is a good bet to see various shorebird species.
A few BROWN PELICANS were reported this week. On 7/12 one bird was
seen from Sunset Beach in Cape May Point. On 7/13 two birds were
seen in Hereford Inlet.
The SANDHILL CRANE is still being seen in the Beaver Swamp WMA at the
end of Beaver Dam Rd. The bird was last reported yesterday, 7/13.
While GULL-BILLED TERNS can be found at Beaver Dam WMA with the
crane, one tern was reported from Stone Harbor Point on 7/11.
A SANDWICH TERN has been seen frequently this week from 7/11 through
yesterday, 7/13. Most reports are of this bird being seen flying
overhead or sitting at Bunker Pond in the Cape May Point State Park.
A “breeding plumage” BLACK TERN was reported sitting with a number of
ROYAL TERNS from Champagne Island in Hereford Inlet, on 7/12.
Also seen on 7/12 from Cape May Point were a handful of WILSON’S
STORM PETRELS and two PARASITIC JAEGERS.
Finally, a SORA was reported from the Meadows on 7/10.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center on East Lake
Drive in Cape May Point is open Thursday through Tuesday, 9-4:30.
The Northwood Center will be closed on Wednesdays through the months
of July and August and will resume a seven day a week schedule in
September. The Center for Research and Education on Route 47 in
Goshen is open 7 days a week, 9-4:30. Due to the upcoming store
inventory at the Northwood Center, there may be lack of hotline
coverage in the next couple of weeks. We will do our best to insure
that there is uninterrupted coverage during this time.
