Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for July 16,
2006. This report covers over a two week period, from June 30th to July 16th
and, will be updated again on July 27.
Due to the lack of reports and the compiler's vacation and various other
commitments, the Voice of Audubon has not been updated weekly. I hope to
resume the weekly reports without interruption in early August, when hopefully,
there will be more reports.
The highlight of the period was a MISSISSIPPI KITE that was seen on July
1st. It was observed flying over Route 1 in South Kingstown near the Succotash
Road exit.
ROYAL TERN is a rare bird in our area, however early July is a good time to
find them. There was one found on June 30th at Third beach Restoration Area
in Middletown. A ROYAL TERN was found at
the Charleston Breachway on the 7th, on the west-delta of the Ninigret Pond
flats. Another one was seen on the 14th, roosting on a sandbar on Ninigret
Pond, about a mile west of the Breachway.
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS made a big push through Rhode Island this week. On
the 11th, 350 were seen at the mudflats at the Charlestown Breachway, and on
the 12th there were 183 there and on the 13th, close to 100 were still
feeding.

the 30th.
