EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, July 17.
A BLACK-TAILED GODWIT was discovered today at the Parker River refuge
on Plum Island where it was seen at various points between the main salt pans
and the North Pool area immediately south of the refuge Maintenance shed.
Other reports from Plum Island have included 1 HOODED MERGANSER, 6
LEAST BITTERNS, 1 TRICOLORED HERON, 24 GLOSSY IBISES, 11
VIRGINIA RAILS, 2 SORAS, roughly 1000 TREE SWALLOWS, and 1
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO.
Seabirds seen on Saturday on the southern end of Stellwagen Bank included
800 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 60 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 12 MANX
SHEARWATERS, 600 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 4 NORTHERN
GANNETS, 1 unidentified Skua, 4 unidentified jaegers, 1 LESSER BLACK-
BACKED GULL, and 2 ROYAL TERNS, and a report from the northern end
of the Bank included 150 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 20 SOOTY SHEAR-
WATERS, 5 MANX SHEARWATERS, and roughly 1000 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS.
Estimated numbers at South Beach in Chatham included 25 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS, 300 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 50 SEMI-
PALMATED PLOVERS, roughly 200 WILLETS (including several of
the western race), 6 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 500 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 200 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 100 RED KNOTS, 500 SHORT-
BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, and 2 SALTMARSH
SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, reports from Nantucket included 1 YELLOW-
CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 4 WHIMBRELS,
2 BLACK TERNS, 57 ROSEATE TERNS, 107 COMMON TERNS, and
1 SHORT-EARED OWL, and miscellaneous reports from the weekend
included a BLACK VULTURE in Eastham, 5 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS
and 3 VESPER SPARROWS at the Plymouth airport, 1 SOLITARY SAND-
PIPER and 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO elsewhere in Plymouth, and
a BALD EAGLE at Kettle Island in Manchester.
