This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

BELATED REPORTS:

On the 30th of June 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS and 1 dead NORTHERN FULMAR were
about 2 kilometers from shore near Table Bluff (Elias Elias).

3 July
-----------
In the Ferndale Bottoms, just west of Fulmor Lane on Port Kenyon Road
("Arlinda Corner") were 700 BAND-TAILED PIGEONS. Seven EURASIAN COLLARED
DOVES were also at this location; 2 more were on Hookton Slough Road along
Table Bluff (David Fix).

At the Arcata Marsh were 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL at the Allen Marsh and 3
WILSON'S PHALAROPE at Klopp Lake (Elias Elias).

In MENDOCINO COUNTY were 45 SOOTY SHEARWATERS and 1 PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATER
(Kerry Ross).

4 July
-----------
Two PILEATED WOODPECKERS were at a private residence off of Cummings Road,
in Eureka (Tom Leskiw).

At Klopp Lake there were many fall arriving shorebirds including: 350 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 75 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 2 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, and 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS (Ryan Terrill).

In MENDOCINO COUNTY, at the Little River Headlands were a flyby TUFTED
PUFFIN and at least 3 PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS were with SOOTY SHEARWATERS
(Sean McAllister, Kerry Ross).

5 July

6 July
-----------
Along the south side of Bear River Ridge were 7 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS. A
PEREGRINE FALCON pair were near Alton (David Fix)

7 July
-----------
Today the Alderpoint Brreding Bird Survey was conducted. Highlights included
2 new species for the count: COMMON MERGANSER (13) and WILD TURKEY (3).
Other highlights were 4 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS, 3 LARK SPARROWS, 9
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHS, 12 CHIPPING SPARROWS, 4 WESTERN KINGBIRDS, 16
GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, 1 ROCK WREN (Alderpoint Road and Dyerville Loop
intersection), and 1 ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER (Kerry Ross).

8 July

In the "big water area", north of King Salmon, were 56 MARBLED MURRELETS, 1
PACIFIC LOON, and 1 RHINOCEROS AUKLET (Matt Wachs).

A PURPLE MARTIN was at Clam Beach (Kerry Ross).

At the Arcata Marsh, along the "channel" (?) near the south end, 2
GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES were seen (Barney, no last name).

On a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO survey today 2 cuckoos were found: 1 just south of
the bridge on Cock Robin Island Road (west of Loleta) and one to the east of
the bridge on the island (Elias Elias). Both were supposedly unmated males
but nonetheless exciting and hopeful!

A GREATER-WHITE FRONTED GOOSE was still present with the domestic goose
flock at the west end of Old Samoa Road, in the Arcata Bottoms (Elias
Elias).

At the Blue Lake Fish Hatchery a WILLOW FLYCATCHER, seemingly on territory,
was still present just downriver from the hatchery (Scott Carey).

9 July

In the "big water area", north of King Salmon, were 56 MARBLED MURRELETS,
and 2 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS (Matt Wachs).

A male TENNESSEE WARBLER was found along the Eel River, downstream from Rio
Dell where the highway crosses; it was seen from a boat (Kerry Ross).

>From the Table Bluff overlook a PACIFIC LOON was seen (Scott Carey).

10 July

Highlights from sightings east of Kneeland included 2 BLUE GROUSE just south
of Jack Shaw Road (Jay Seeger).

11 July
-----------
In the "big water area", north of King Salmon, were 74 MARBLED MURRELETS and
1 RHINOCEROS AUKLET (Matt Wachs).

A hybrid ROSE-BREASTED X BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was seen at a private
residence at Azalea Hill, McKinleyville (Gary Lester).

12 July
-----------
In Southern Humboldt County, 1 ROCK WREN was seen 4 miles east of
Garberville, on Alderpoint Road near the distinct rocky outcrops. One OAK
TITMOUSE was found in oak cover on Island Mountain Road; a BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER was in wilow cover on the same road. A WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH
was in Black Oak cover by the New Harris General Store (Gary Lester).

13 July
-----------
A CRESTED CARACARA was found on the South Spit of Humboldt Bay, accessed
from the parking area just south of the "narrows", where the bay comes near
the road. The CARACARA was on the waveslope and was feeding on a juvenile
River Otter (Brian Atkinson).

At Cock Robin Island, in the Loleta Bottoms, the YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was
heard in the previously mentioned location. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen
just east of the Ocean Ranch Wildlife Area parking lot and 4 EURASIAN
COLLARE DOVES were seen along Cannibal Island Road, also in the Loleta
Bottoms (Ryan Terrill).

14 July
-----------
The CRESTED CARACARA was seen this morning flying near the location where it
was found. Later it flew over the Table Bluff overlook and headed towards
Ocean Ranch (Pablo Herrera). Later, the bird was seen by the observer on
Copenhagen Road, meaning the bird is ranging over a wide area (Pablo Herrera
fide Rob Fowler).

In Southern Humboldt county CALIFORNIA THRASHERS were noted in the town of
Shelter Cove: 1 singing behind the Shelter Cove General Store and 1 was
feeding on a driveway 1/2 mile up King Peak Road (Gary Lester).

15 July
-----------
A singing WILLOW FLYCATCHER was detected and recorded along Roper Slough
(accessible only by boat) about 1/2 kilometer northeast of the Cock Robin
Island bridge (Gary Falxa).
