At least one and possibly 2 YELLOW RAILS have been reported near a large reservoir
east of Calgary. This is an unusual location for the species which, when in our
area, is usually reported at suitable wetlands in the foothills to the west of
Calgary. Bill Wilson originally reported the birds on the morning of Saturday, July
15, to the north and west of the parking lot at the north end of Langdon Reservoir
and Reid Barclay then reported them there on the evening of Saturday, July 15. The
parking lot can be reached by following RR 270 south from Hwy 560 east of Langdon.

An adult TRUMPETER SWAN was seen at McElroy Slough on Sunday, July 16. The bird was
seen by Terry Korolyk. Other locations for the species in our area this summer
included a bird on RR 283 just east of Calgary through the first half of June, then
a bird at Clear Lake, 15 km east of Stavely, through the last half of June. McElroy
Slough is on Inverlake Rd, off Hwy 1 at Chestermere Lake, east of Calgary.

Migrating shorebirds from the north were reported in small numbers and variety, at
sloughs in our area over the weekend. Highlights were a total of 7 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS seen by Terry Korolyk Sunday,July 16, one km east of Hwy 9 on Twp Rd 273
east of Irricana and 8 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES seen by Terry the same day at the
Cattleland Feedlots Slough at the north end of Hwy 817 north of Strathmore. Reid
Barclay observed 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at a wetland just east of Langdon on July 15.

Bill Wilson reported 16 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at the SW corner of Eagle Lake, just SE of
Strathmore, on Saturday,July 15, while Terry Korolyk saw a single BONAPARTE'S GULL
on Twp Rd 270 just east of RR 261 on Sunday, July 16.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, July 20.
