This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was prepared Tuesday, July 18, at 3
p.m.

Birds of interest include TRUMPETER SWAN, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, LEAST
BITTERN, TRICOLORED HERON, WHITE IBIS, LEAST and BLACK TERNS, CLIFF
SWALLOW, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, and EASTERN MEADOWLARK.

A TRUMPETER SWAN continues at Oxbow Lake, east of Laurel in Anne
Arundel Co, MD, as of July 17.

A WILSON'S STORM-PETREL was observed July 15 from the end of Broadkill
Beach Rd, DE. Two WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were spotted July 16 at
Fowler Beach, DE.

The July 15 survey of Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, turned up 4
LEAST BITTERNS, a TRICOLORED HERON, a dozen species of shorebird, and
2 BLACK TERNS.

On July 14, 2 TRICOLORED HERONS were dancing at the north end of
Skimmer Island in Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD.

An immature WHITE IBIS was discovered July 15 at Prime Hook NWR, DE;
it was at the end of Oyster Rocks Rd, just across the Broadkill River.

Southbound shorebirds are building along the DE coast. The Fowler
Beach impoundments held at least 14 STILT SANDPIPERS on July 16. A
REEVE, or female Ruff, was discovered at Bombay Hook NWR July 14; it
was on the bay side of Bear Swamp pool.

Closer to home were some SOLITARY SANDPIPERS. Three were seen July 15
in Montgomery Co, MD, in a large puddle in a field just off Rte 107
south of Poolesville. That same day 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at the
Edmonston pumping station in Prince George's Co, MD; this is located
where Paint Branch Trail intersects with Decatur and Taylor Sts.

Eight LEAST TERNS were seen July 14 in the vicinity of the Brandon
Woods Pond in Anne Arundel Co, MD. A BLACK TERN was reported from
Bombay Hook's Raymond Pool on July 15.

A new bridge that carries MD Rte 34 over the Potomac River, just north
of Shepherdstown, WV, is hosting a large colony of CLIFF SWALLOWS.

Pea Ridge Rd in Garrett Co, MD, continues to attract HENSLOW'S
SPARROWS; on July 14, 2 were observed, while 2 others were singing
along this stretch.

On July 13, an EASTERN MEADOWLARK flushed up in Kenilworth Park, NE
DC.
