Thursday July 20, 2006 with reports of ARCTIC TERN, WHITE-WINGED
DOVE, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, SANDWICH TERN, KENTUCKY WARBLER,
seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
A probable WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen off Oberly Rd at the Alpha
Grasslands Jul 14. The bird was flushed from the roadside near the
mailboxes at the top of the hill.
An ARCTIC TERN was observed at Wreck Pond in Spring Lake Jul 19 at
1:30 pm. Also there was a SANDWICH TERN among the COMMON TERNS,
FORSTER'S TERNS, and LEAST TERNS. Look for terns and shorebirds on
the sandbar at the eastern side of the pond; low tide is best. Three
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were viewed off Pier Beach, at the southern
end of the boardwalk in Spring Lake Jul 20.
Four BROWN PELICANS were viewed near Barnegat Inlet from Island Beach
State Park Jul 14.
Shorebird numbers are increasing at Brigantine NWR; this week birds
there included 80 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, STILT SANDPIPER, 6
WHIMBRELS, 80 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 150 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS,
also there was a LEAST BITTERN and 10 GULL-BILLED TERNS.
The Dot & Brooks Evert Memorial Trail in Burlington County hosted
EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, 4 KENTUCKY WARBLERS, and 3 HOODED WARBLERS Jul 18.
A WESTERN SANDPIPER highlighted 12 species of shorebirds present this
week at Sandy Hook's salt pond Jul 16. A WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, 2
NORTHERN GANNETS, and a BLACK TERN were noted at the false hook Jul
20. A CASPIAN TERN was over north pond Jul 14.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Sandy Hook has no summer entrance fee for birding as long as you park
in designated lots. Tell the toll attendant "you are birding and not
parking in beach access lots." This allows you to park at the
Visitor Center, Horseshoe Cove, Scout Camp, all Fort Hancock lots, K-
lot, and SHBO. Fees are not charged before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
If you arrive before 7 am an attendant at the Ranger Station will
give you a pass that allows you access to all parking areas.
