AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS have returned to the Calgary Weir. Since early in July,
approximately 40 of the birds have taken up feeding and roosting positions below the
Weir as they have every summer for the last 3-4 years. An observation area can be
reached by parking at Pearce Estate which is on the south and west sides of the Bow
River just north of the Cushing Bridge. Go north at the first set of lights west of
the bridge.
BLACK-NECKED STILTS are probably raising young this summer at a large slough east of
Irricana. Adult birds have been seen at a large slough at Twp Rd 273, 1 km east of
Hwy 9 several times this season and on Sunday July 16, Terry Korolyk reported both
adults were very aggressive towards him as he birdwatched at athe slough. Other
possible breeding locations include the large slough east of Sheppard, the slough on
Rge Rd 283 south of Hwy 560, and at Weed Lake east of Langdon.
Fall shorebird migration has been underway since the 3rd week in June. Species
reported include GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SHORT-BILLED and LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, BAIRD'S, LEAST, SEMIPALMATED, PECTORAL, STILT and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS
and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is on Monday July 24.
