This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, July 21 at 1:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.

The REDDISH EGRET found almost three weeks ago at the mouth of the
Carpinteria Salt Marsh was still present on the 16th, along with a PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVER. Most of this area is private property, and unfortunately you
cannot see the mouth of the estuary from public property, but you can view a
large area of the marsh from the end of Ash Avenue. You might get lucky.

At the Coal Oil Point Reserve in Goleta, a RED KNOT was found on Sunday the
16th, and was still present the next day. Also here were an adult COMMON
TERN, 9 American Avocets, and several Least Terns, which are nesting.

A CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE was found on the 15th on the south side of lower
Atascadero Creek, west of Ward Drive. Another chickadee was found on the
17th on the UCSB campus, calling from the trees next to Biology Building II,
which is at the corner of UCEN and Lagoon Roads.

The two ROSS'S GEESE are still in the pond at the Rancho Goleta mobile home
park off Ward Drive.

Highlights from last week's boat trips at Cachuma Lake include three WOOD
DUCKS.

PURPLE MARTINS are again nesting in Nojoqui Falls Park, in sycamores near
the parking lot.

TRI-COLORED BLACKBIRDS were still being seen this morning on the south side
of Lompoc, near F Street and Locust Avenue. Look on the wires and in the
blackberry bushes and adjacent fields in the southeast corner of Old La
Purisima Mission Park.

Both the CACKLING GOOSE and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front pond at
Waller Park in Santa Maria, and were seen on the 14th.

That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
