You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Saturday July 22. The roster this week includes
sightings of BROWN PELICAN, ROSEATE TERN, WILSON’S STORM-PETREL, SURF
SCOTER and SANDHILL CRANE.
Fall migration is beginning to pick up as more migrant species are
being found in the Cape May area this week. The first migrant
BOBOLINK were reported flying over while more shorebird species seem
to be easily found in the proper habitats. Swallows are becoming
more numerous in Cape May air space with no less than five species
being reported. Now is the time to get out if you want to catch one
last glimpse of those early fall migrants before they head off for
parts south.
There have been a few sightings of BROWN PELICAN this week. Five
were spotted on 7/16 from St. Peter’s beach in Cape May Point. Three
more were reported on 7/20, again from Cape May Point.
At least two ROSEATE TERNS were seen in Cape May this week, on 7/20
from Cape May Point. Two more terns were spotted in Cumberland
County in the Bivalve area, again on 7/20.
A few WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS were spotted this week. Six petrels
were seen in the Bivalve area of Cumberland County and four were
spotted form Cape May Point on 7/20. On 7/19 10+ (all singletons)
were counted from the Cape May- Lewes ferry.
On 7/18 an immature drake SURF SCOTER was seen from Sunset Beach.
The SANDHILL CRANE continues at the Beaver Swamp WMA at the end of
Beaver Dam Road.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center on East Lake
Drive in Cape May Point is open Thursday through Tuesday, 9-4:30.
The Northwood Center will be closed on Wednesdays through the months
of July and August and will resume a seven day a week schedule in
September. Northwood Center will be closed on this Tuesday 7/25 and
Wednesday 7/26 for inventory. The Center for Research and Education
on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7 days a week, 9-4:30. Due to the
upcoming store inventory at the Northwood Center, there may be lack
of hotline coverage in the next couple of weeks. We will do our best
to insure that there is uninterrupted coverage during this time.

May, Cumberland, and Atlantic Counties. Updates are made weekly.

The pelagic trip scheduled for August 20 out of Belmar NJ is now
