Greetings! This is the Syracuse Rare Bird Alert for the week
of July 24, 2006
Highlights:
SANDHILL CRANE
ROYAL TERN
GREAT EGRET
STILT SANDPIPER
RED CROSSBILL
MontezumaWildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
-------------
A late report came in about the sighting of a ROYAL TERN in non-breeding
plumage in Larue's Lagoon on July 16. There have been no reports since. Two
pair of SANDHILL CRANES were reported at Morgan Road on July 17.
Madison County
------------
Two pair of RED CROSSBILLS with fledgling(s) were reported from the top of
Muller Hill on July 10.
Ditchbank Road had a good variety of shorebirds this week including STILT SANDPIPER,
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER, GREATER AND LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMI-PAL
LEAST AND SPOTTED SANDPIPER.
A GREAT EGRET was seen in the vicinity of Briggs Bay in Bridgeport.
Oswego County
------------
On July 22 at Sandy pond the following birds were seen. BALD EAGLE, SEMI-PAL
PLOVER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, RUDDY TURNSTONE, SANDERLING, SEMI-PAL AND LEAST
SANDPIPER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, BONAPARTE'S GULL, CASPIAN COMMON AND BLACK
TERN.
Onondaga County
------------
On July 20 a GREAT EGRET was seen on Onondaga Lake at the State Fair exit.
On July 21 a FISH CROW was heard in the University area.
This morning (July 24) VESPER SPARROWS are still singing on Perry Road in the Town
of Van Buren west of Whiskey Hollow.
