Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was recorded on
Monday, July 24 at 10:40 a.m. To report a bird sighting, leave a message after the

Two WESTERN SANDPIPERS were seen by Terry Korolyk on July 22 at Clear Lake, east of
Stavely. The birds were in breeding plumage, but one was much brighter than the
other. The birds were amongst 20 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and small numbers of LEAST,
BAIRD'S and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS seen along the south west shoreline of the Lake
which can be accessed by driving 15 km east of Hwy 2 on Twp Rd 140 just south of
Stavely. Also at Clear Lake were a total of 84 GREATER YELLOWLEGS.

On Sunday July 23, Terry reported a good variety of shore and wading birds at the
Cattleland Feedlot Slough at the north end of Hwy 817 north of Strathmore. Included
were 26 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 40 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and approximately 600
WILSON'S PHALAROPES.

At sloughs off Twp Rd 270 in the Rge Rd 254-261 area, Terry reported 38 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS , mostly breeding plumaged adults with 4 juveniles. Also there were 5 female
or immature HOODED MERGANSERS.

Terry reported the adult TRUMPTER SWAN seen at McElroy Slough July 16 was still
there on July 23. McElroy Slough is off Inverlake Road at Chestermere Lake.

Fall songbird migration has started in Calgary. The Calgary Bird Banding Society
reported that 3 TENNESSEE WARBLERS and 2 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were banded at
Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on July 22.

Susan Cameron observed 2 GREAT EGRETS on the west shore of Hastings Lake off Rge Rd
210 west of Tofield on July 14. For more info, call Susan at 1-780-435-5123. Lloyd
Bennett has reported a GREAT EGRET has been at Fincastle Lake, east of Taber for
some time now.

Jeff Banks has reported a SORA RAIL has been seen by many observers at Jeffrey's
Pond at IBS in Calgary and was still there on July 23.
