You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Friday July 28. The roster this week includes sightings
of DICKCISSEL, BROWN PELICAN, SANDWICH TERN, WILSON’S STORM-PETREL
and CURLEW SANDPIPER.
Shorebird numbers and diversity are getting better day by day. There
have been no less than twenty species reported in the last week.
With the shorebird rarities found further to our north it seem that
it would be prudent to get out and check your local shorebird
hotspot. You never know what you may find. As well, migrant
passerines are moving, with the chance of good flights coming form
any northwesterly system that may bring respite from the oppressive
heat.
A DICKCISSEL was found yesterday 7/27, at the “Cape Island
Preserve.” The bird was reported to be hanging out in an area of
purple Vetch.
BROWN PELICANS are being reported form various locations in the
Hotline coverage area this week. The most recent report was of 24
BROWN PELICANS at 84th Street in Sea Isle on 7/26.
There are still numbers of WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS being seen in from
Cape May Point this week. Two were seen yesterday 7/27.
A SANDWICH TERN was seen in the Cape May Point State Park on 7/23.
Lastly, yesterday 7/27 provided a brief view of a CURLEW SANDPIPER on
Ocean Drive across from the Mill Creek Marina.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center on East Lake
Drive in Cape May Point is open Thursday through Tuesday, 9-4:30.
The Northwood Center will be closed on Wednesdays through the months
of July and August and will resume a seven day a week schedule in
September. The Center for Research and Education on Route 47 in
Goshen is open 7 days a week, 9-4:30.
