Thursday July 27, 2006 with reports of CURLEW SANDPIPER, AMERICAN
AVOCET, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
A CURLEW SANDPIPER made a brief appearance along Ocean Drive in Cape
May: call the CMBO Birding Hotline for details.
Brigantine NWR hosted an alternate-plumage AMERICAN AVOCET along the
south dike Jul 23; also noted at Brig this week were LEAST BITTERN,
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 14 species of shorebirds including
WESTERN SANDPIPER and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and
GULL-BILLED TERN.
Sandy Hook's salt pond and adjacent north beach tallied 12 species of
shorebirds this week including 400+ SANDERLINGS. A basic plumaged
BLACK TERN was there Jul 23. An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was singing at
the garden July 20-23.
A WILSON'S STORM-PETREL was noted off the Spring Lake Boardwalk Jul 21.
In Salem County 50 CATTLE EGRETS were found around Compromise Rd
along with singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROW Jul 23.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Sandy Hook has no summer entrance fee for birding as long as you park
in designated lots. Tell the toll attendant "you are birding and not
parking in beach access lots." This allows you to park at the
Visitor Center, Horseshoe Cove, Scout Camp, all Fort Hancock lots, K-
lot, and SHBO. Fees are not charged before 7 am and after 5 pm. If
you arrive before 7 am an attendant at the Ranger Station will give
you a pass that allows you free access to all parking areas.
