Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was recorded on

recording, or to bypass the recorded message, press the pound key on your touch tone
phone. To speak to a naturalist, please phone 311 if calling locally during office
hours and ask for Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, or dial 403-268-2489 if calling from

A pair of GREAT EGRETS were seen along the west shore of Hastings Lake west of
Tofield on July 14 by Susan Cameron. Susan thinks these birds may be part of the
family of GREAT EGRETS that left Saint Albert in the Autumn of 2005. A pair raised 4
young there. The present location can be accessed from Rge Rd 210. For more details
call Susan at 1-780-435-5123. The only other report of GREAT EGRET this summer in
Alberta is a bird seen by Lloyd Bennett that has been at Fincastle Lake east of
Taber for some time.

The first SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS of the fall migration were
seen by Terry Korolyk on July 27. Two SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were at the SW corner of
Clear Lake on Twp Rd 140, 15 km east of Stavely and 2 female BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS
were on a wetland on Twp Rd 182 just east of Rge Rd 260 north of Ensign.

Other shore/wading birds seen by Terry on July 27 included 10 breeding plumaged
STILT SANDPIPERS, 80 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 10 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 10
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.

A GOLDEN EAGLE was observed by Terry on July 27, in a very unusual location for this
time of year; hunting at the wetland on Twp Rd 182, east of Rge Rd 260, north of
Ensign.

Nimali Seneviratne has reported WESTERN KINGBIRDS have bred here this year, just
south of the Hwy 22X bridge in Calgary, as they have in recent years. She and
members of a CFNS (Nature Calgary) fieldtrip observed at least one young at the site
of the old Lafarge property south of the bridge.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is on Monday July 31.
