EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, July 31.
The BLACK-TAILED GODWIT at Plum Island was still present at least as
recently as Saturday, a LARK SPARROW was seen yesterday just south of
the North Pool overlook at Plum Island, and other weekend reports from the
island included 140 GLOSSY IBISES, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 170
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 25 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 90 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 1 WHIMBREL, roughly 1000 SEMIPALMATED SAND-
PIPERS, 80 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 4 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS,
6 STILT SANDPIPERS, and 180 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
Weekend reports from the north end of Stellwagen Bank included 600
GREATER SHEARWATERS, 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 20 SOOTY
SHEARWATERS, 6 MANX SHEARWATERS, 750 WILSON'S STORM-
PETRELS, 4 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER,
1 POMARINE JAEGER, and 1 ROSEATE TERN.
A shorebird survey at Duxbury Beach yielded 57 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS, roughly 400 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 92 RUDDY
TURNSTONES, 850 SANDERLINGS, 4400 SEMIPALMATED SAND-
PIPERS, and 86 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and at the Crane
Wildlife Management Area in Falmouth there were 2 YELLOW-BILLED
CUCKOOS, 20 FIELD SPARROWS, 6 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS,
and 6 ORCHARD ORIOLES.
Seen at Belle Isle Marsh in East Boston were 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON,
1 VIRGINIA RAIL, 57 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 32 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 730 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 70 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 162 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and 7 SALTMARSH
SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, and miscellaneous reports from the
weekend included roughly 3000 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and
160 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Lynn Beach, 3 GREAT EGRETS and a BALD
EAGLE in Stow, 15 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at the Great Meadows
Refuge in Concord, a LITTLE BLUE HERON and 9 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS in Sudbury, and 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON and 2
BLACK TERNS at Nantucket.
