This Bird Alert was recorded on Monday, July 31 at 10:45am
A pair of VIRGINIA RAILS may have bred in the marshy area below the dam at
McGregor Lake this year. Wilf Schurig has reported that he has observed and
photographed the birds over the past couple of weeks at that location but
that he has not seen the birds in recent visits. This is the second report
of the species in southern Alberta this year; a bird was heard calling below
the observation area at the Banff Cave and Basin Marsh earlier in the
summer. McGregor Lake is just west of Milo on Hwy 542. For more
information on the birds, call Wilf Schurig at 938-4780.
A CASPIAN TERM was seen on the Bow River at the north end of the Inglewood
Bird Sanctuary in Calgary on July 30. The bird was seen there by Roland
Guenther at 12:30pm.
The first HUDSONIAN GODWIT of the fall shore and wading bird season in our
area has been seen. Terry Korolyk observed a mostly breeding-plumaged bird
at a large slough on Twp Rd 273 approximately a kilomatre east of Hwy 9 at
Irriciana on Saturday, July 29. The bird was in a flock of over 50 MARBLED
GODWITS and assorted other shorebirds which included 6 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS.
Terry also reported other species of shorebirds were in fairly good numbers
and variety in the Irricana Sloughs on this day. Terry also reported the
adult TRUMPETER SWAN that was at McElroy Slough through July was still there
on July 29. McElroy Slough is on Inverlake Road off Hwy One at the north
end of Chestermere Lake.
A male RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was reported at feeders at Rafter 6 Ranch
when it was seen by Bill Wilson on July 29. The Ranch is just south of the
Hwys 1-1X junction at Bow Valley Prov. Park. Bill reported the same day 8 -
10 RED CROSSBILLS on the hill above Hwy 40 on Hwy 68, while Jason Rogers
watched 40 RED CROSSBILLS last week at Vermilion Lakes in Banff National
Park.
A HOODED CROW has apparently been in Whitecourt, northern Alberta for at
least a year. Those interested in more details can call Ken Havard in
Calgary at 242-0664.
