This is the Kentucky rare bird alert, sponsored by the Kentucky
Ornithological Society. This update is current as of August 1, 2006 at
11:00 AM EDT. This is a summary of the sightings posted at
http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm , with additional information on the
location and/or dates of the rare and unusual. The highlights of this
update are:
This week had numerous postings of early shorebird sightings. Most of
the following is a combined list from multiple observations. Mitchell
Lake in Ballard County had LESSER GREATERLEGS, SOLITARY, SPOTTED,
LEAST, STILT, PECTORAL, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and SANDERLINGS.
Most were in small numbers. Also seen were a small number of BLACK TERN,
8 LEAST TERN, and 4 MISSISSIPPI KITE.
Peabody WMA had LEAST, SPOTTED, PECTORAL, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, AND SANDERLINGS. Also noted
there were OSPREY, CASPIAN TERN, BLACK TERN, and SEDGE WREN. And 4
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN first noted on the 21st and still there on the
31st.
Fulton County's rarest observation was a LARK SPARROW on the 26th in
the Lake 9 area. Also noted were WESTERN, LEAST, PECTORAL (250), and
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, SANDERLING, and WILSON'S PHALAROPE. Also counted
there were 210 GREAT EGRET, 350 WOOD DUCK, and 6 LITTLE BLUE HERON at
lake 9.
The Sloughs of Henderson County held SPOTTED, SOLITARY, and PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
Other birds mentioned were COMMON MOORHEN, LITTLE BLUE HERON, and SEDGE
WREN.
Fishing creek mudflats in Pulaski County had SANDERLINGS, LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and SPOTTED, SOLITARY, PECTORAL, LEAST,
and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.
The Minor Clark Fish hatchery also held a smattering of shorebirds.
PECTORAL, SPOTTED, and LEAST SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and
SHORT-BILLED DOWTCHER. A PIED-BILLED GREBE was also seen.
Finally, 500-600 CLIFF SWALLOWS were noted at Meng's Pond, an AMERICAN
BITTERN was flushed from a Jefferson County hay field, and 5 BLACK TERN
were counted a Cooley's pond in Wayne County.
