Thursday Aug 3, 2006 with reports of WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, UPLAND
SANDPIPER, MERLIN, seasonal and local reports of interest and
announcements.
Sandy Hook's salt pond and adjacent beach hosted 17 species of
shorebirds this week including 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER Jul 29. Three WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were off the end of
the fisherman's trail the same day and a BLACK TERN was there Jul 30.
A juvenile BONAPARTE'S GULL visited the salt pond Jul 29-30 and the
ACADIAN FLYCATCHER continues singing at the garden.
Birds seen at Brigantine NWR Jul 29 included NORTHERN BOBWHITE, LEAST
BITTERN near the gull pond tower, CATTLE EGRET, thousands of LEAST
SANDPIPERS and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 WHIMBREL, WESTERN
SANDPIPER, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER.
In Salem County Jul 30 an UPLAND SANDPIPER was noted at the sod farm
along Rte 40 just east of the intersection of Pointers-Auburn Rd.
Thirty PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were tallied at the Johnson Sod Farm.
Other birds of interest in Salem County this week were 30+ CATTLE
EGRETS at the pond along Compromise Rd, COMMON MOORHEN at Mannington
Marsh, and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW at Featherbed Lane.
Another migrant UPLAND SANDPIPER was found Jul 30 near Assunpink WMA
in the sod field near the intersection of Rte 539 and Herbert Rd.
A very early MERLIN was observed at the Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood
Jul 31-Aug 1.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Sandy Hook has no summer entrance fee for birding as long as you park
in designated lots. Tell the toll attendant "you are birding and not
parking in beach access lots." This allows you to park at the Visitor
Center, Horseshoe Cove, Scout Camp, all Fort Hancock lots, K-lot, and
SHBO. Fees are not charged before 7 am and after 5 pm. If you arrive
before 7 am an attendant at the Ranger Station will give you a pass
that allows you free access to all parking areas.
