This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, August 4.
An AMERICAN AVOCET was discovered today at the Stage Island pool
at Plum Island, and other reports from the Island this week have
included 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON, 1 MERLIN, ROUGHLY 1000 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 5
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 4 STILT SANDPIPERS, roughly 100
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 1 LITTLE GULL,
1 FORSTER’S TERN, 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 16 WILLOW
FLYCATCHERS, 10 PURPLE MARTINS, roughly 5000 TREE SWALLOWS,
200 BANK SWALLOWS, 200 BARN SWALLOWS, 40 MARSH WRENS,
180 GRAY CATBIRDS, 17 BROWN THRASHERS, 127 CEDAR WAXWINGS,
72 YELLOW WARBLERS, AN EARLY MIGRANT MAGNOLIA WARBLER,
1 PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, 1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 20
SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, 1 SEASIDE SPARROW,
26 BALTIMORE ORIOLES, and 16 PURPLE FINCHES.
Recent reports from the north end of Stellwagen Bank have
included 550 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 75 SOOTY
SHEARWATERS, 12 MANX SHEARWATERS, roughly 2000 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS, 1 LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, 1 POMARINE JAEGER,
1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 8 LAUGHING GULLS, and 3 ROSEATE TERNS,
and reports from the southern end of the Bank have included
roughly 1000 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 200 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 12 MANX
SHEARWATERS, 2000 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 9 LEAST SAND-
PIPERS, 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 2 POMARINE JAEGERS, 2 ROSEATE
TERNS, and 170 COMMON TERNS.
Combined totals from North Monomoy Island and nearby South Beach in
Chatham included a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 750 BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVERS, 1900 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 31 PIPING
PLOVERS, 80 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 155 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 42 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 360 WILLETS (including
15 of the western race), 48 WHIMBREL, 100 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 2
MARBLED GODWITS, 340 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 750 RED KNOTS,
3800 SANDERLINGS, 9500 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2
WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 500 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 51 WHITE-
RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 4 DUNLIN, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS, 5100 SHORT-
BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL, 3 LESSER BLACK-
BACKED GULLS, 1 ROYAL TERN, 1 ARCTIC TERN, and 2 BLACK
SKIMMERS.
At Race Point in Provincetown there were 60 ROSEATE TERNS, 1800
COMMON TERNS, 1 FORSTER’S TERN, and 1 BLACK TERN, at
Nantucket there were 2 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, 2 LESSER BLACK-
BACKED GULLS, 116 ROSEATE TERNS, 1 ARCTIC TERN, and 3
BLACK TERNS, and miscellaneous reports this week have included 45
GREAT BLUE HERONS and 8 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at the Great
Meadows Refuge in Concord, a GREAT EGRET in Lexington, and 4
PEREGRINE FALCONS in the airspace over the New England Aquarium
in Boston.
