WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday August 7, 2006

A group birding on Mt Greylock recently found something not present therein
25 years, a singing BICKNELL’S THRUSH. It was at the parking lot at thenorth
end of Saddleball Trail.

Also noted over the weekend on Greylock were a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, a
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, 17 COMMON RAVENS, 7
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 2 BROWN CREEPERS, a WINTER WREN, 5 GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLETS, 2 NASHVILLE WARBLERS, 5 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, 15 MAGNOLIA
WARBLERS, 12 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, 7 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 5
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, 2 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, 4 CANADA WARBLERS, 2 FIELD
SPARROWS, 6 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 30 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, an INDIGO BUNTING, 3
BALTIMORE ORIOLES, and a PURPLE FINCH.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was at a feeder in Belchertown, and a COMMON
NIGHTHAWK was also seen flying overhead.

At other locations in Belchertown there were 3 WOOD DUCKS, 5 EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEES. a LEAST FLYCATCHER, 2 EASTERN KINGBIRDS, over 100 TREE SWALLOWS,
4 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, a BROWN
THRASHER, a SCARLET TANAGER, FIELD and SWAMP SPARROWS, an INDIGO BUNTING and a
PURPLE FINCH.

A COMMON LOON, 3 EASTERN KINGBIRDS, 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS and a BROWN
CREEPER were in Quabbin Park at the Quabbin Reservoir.

A female COMMON MERGANSER and 15 young were present on the Mill River in
Northampton. Seen elsewhere in Northampton was a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.

In Pelham at Gate 10 of the Quabbin Reservoir there were 3 RUFFED GROUSE,4
BLACK-THROATED BLUE and a PRAIRIE WARBLER, 3 SCARLET TANAGERS, and 4 BALTIMORE
ORIOLES.
