A white-morph GREAT BLUE HERON is being seen in the Bearspaw subdivision
of northwest Calgary. The bird first appeared in a pond in the front
yard of Velta Barnes at 137 Bearspaw Hill Road on Friday, Aug 4, and has
returned there on the days of both Sunday, Aug 6, and Monday, Aug 7.

Shore and wading birds were in fairly good numbers and variety in our
area over the weekend. HUDSONIAN GODWITS were still being seen at the
slough east of Irricana on TwpRd 273, one km east of Hwy 9, on both
Friday, Aug 4, and Saturday, Aug 5, with Chris Havard seeing two there
on Friday. Terry Korolyk observed 7 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS there on
Friday, Aug 4, then saw another 7 along with good numbers of other
shorebirds at a slough on the east side of the 36 St NE extension, north
of Hwy 566. At Lake Macdonald by the red-and-white smokestacks east of
36 St NE between Hwys 564 & 566, Terry observed 600 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES on Saturday, Aug 5. Terry also observed 7 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS amongst good numbers of other shorebirds in shallow pools on the
west side of the N-S road at Clear Lake, 15 km east of Stavely.

An adult COMMON LOON was seen on a slough on RgeRd 261 just south of
TwpRd 270 east of Irricana on Aug 4. The bird was seen by Terry
Korolyk. The species was not seen in the sloughs there previously this
summer. Al & Helga Borgardt watched a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS just
west of the Sue Higgins Bridge at Mallard Pt in east Fish Creek PP at
10 am on Aug 3. At 7 pm, Aug 3, Blair Strachan & Cheryl Walker saw
three PILEATED WOODPECKERS on the east side of the Bow River opposite
Mallard Point.

Terry Poulton observed a family group of 4 AMERICAN BITTERNS on Aug 6 at
the newly-constructed wetland in Mackenzie Towne, which is accessed via
Mackenzie Towne Rd, then Inverness Gate.
