The Texas Rare Bird Alert is presented as a service of Houston Audubon Society.

On the Upper Texas Coast fall shorebird migration is on. There is nothing rare to
report, but the regulars are coming in at Bolivar Flats, Roll Over Pass and other
traditional spots. SWALLOW-TAILED KITES (Elanoides forficatus) are regularly being
seen from Hwy 90 between Liberty and Dayton in good numbers.

A banded GREATER FLAMINGO* (Phoenicopterus ruber) has been seen several times off of
Hwy 136, north of Hwy 188 near the Bayside Marshes on the central coast. The bird
has also been seen from Egery Road off of Hwy 136. The band has not been read yet,
so the origin of the bird is unknown. Please update the alert if you see the bird.
The band information is particularly important.

In the Rio Grande the NORTHERN JACANA* (Jacana spinosa) is still being seen at
Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco. The bird is being seen in either Ibis
Pond in front of the Visitor Center classroom or Avocet Pond. Maps are available at
the visitor’s center. Estero Llano Grande State Park is located on Hwy 1015 off of
Hwy 83.
