This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Wednesday August 9, 2006 with reports of Selasphorus Hummingbird sp,
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, MARBLED GODWIT, seasonal and local reports of
interest and announcements.
A Selasphorus hummingbird species made a brief appearance at a Monroe
Twp feeder Aug 5; no reports since. Birders should be aware that
although still quite unusual, out-of-range hummingbirds --
specifically RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD -- have been recorded as early as
late July in New Jersey.
Birds noted at Brigantine NWR Aug 5-6 included LEAST BITTERN, 6+
LITTLE BLUE HERONS, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 50+ WHIMBRELS, MARBLED
GODWIT, 20 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, STILT
SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, 12 GULL-BILLED TERNS, CASPIAN TERN,
and 100+ BLACK SKIMMERS.
Sandy Hook's salt pond hosted 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS Aug 5-6;
among 14 species of shorebirds noted there this week. A WHIMBREL was
found at Spermaceti Cove Aug 5 and 4 ROYAL TERNS were there as well.
A juvenile BONAPARTE'S GULL continued to hang around the salt pond/
north beach area this week.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was found at Thompson Park in Lincroft Aug 7.
Nearby Stevenson Park in Middletown hosted a migrant LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH Aug 6.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Sandy Hook has no summer entrance fee for birding as long as you park
in designated lots. Tell the toll attendant “you are birding and not
parking in beach access lots.” This allows you to park at the
Visitor Center, Horseshoe Cove, Scout Camp, all Fort Hancock lots, K-
lot, and SHBO. Fees are not charged before 7 am and after 5 pm. If
you arrive before 7 am an attendant at the Ranger Station will give
you a pass that allows you free access to all parking areas.

requested to submit documentation (photos, field sketches, written
descriptions) of Review List Species to the New Jersey Bird Records
