This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday August 10th
2006.
The dark-backed gull, identified as a first state record SLATY-BACKED
GULL, is still being seen in the town of Grand Marais, Cook County, as
it has been each day since July 21st. It tends to loaf on the rocky
beach directly east of downtown and near the East Bay Motel, though it
has also been seen in the harbor and on the break wall.
At least one SNOWY PLOVER is still present southeast of the town of
Odessa, though it has been seen recently in Lac Qui Parle County. On
August 6th, a single plover was along the west shore of the East Pool at
Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge. Walk the road that continues east
from the eastern end of Lac Qui Parle County Road 40 for about
one-and-a-third miles to the shore of East Pool. Turn left to the
northwest and walk along the shore for another two-thirds of a mile and
scan to the north.
Phil Chu found twenty-two PLEGADIS IBISES in Big Stone County on August
5th. They were together in a pothole in Toqua Township along County Road
54, a mile and a half west of County Road 61. On the 6th, Bob Dunlap
reported another IBIS in Traverse County at the north access to Mud
Lake.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON were seen in Lebanon Hills Regional Park
in Dakota County on the 7th. They were at a small pond off 120th Street
near state highway 3.
Among the many shorebirds found by Chad Heins at Swan Lake in Nicollet
County on the 4th were three HUDSONIAN GODWITS.
The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, August 17th
2006.
