This is Terry Toppins with my 250th edition of the Montana
Birding Hotline sponsored by Birdwatcher's Country Store
at the corner of Main and Pattee in Missoula recorded late
Monday Sept 5th, 2005.
Today, Sept. 5th, there was a fallout of warblers and sparrows in the
city park in Westby. There were dozens and dozens of CLAY-COLORED
SPARROWS, 2 PHILADELPHIA and 1 bright BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 2
CAPE MAY WARBLERS and multiples of the following: MAGNOLIA,
MOURNING, MACGILLIVRAY'S, WILSONS, BLACK-AND-WHITE,
ORANGE-CROWNED, TENNESSEE, OVENBIRD, YELLOW, BLACKPOLL
and YELLOW-RUMPED along with the eastern race of NASHVILLE.
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS are still present. If only Westby
wasn't 700 miles from Missoula!
Florence McGuire, a visiting birder from Pennsylvania, found 2 SABINE'S
GULLS on Lower St. Mary's Lake in Glacier National Park today the 5th.
Chuck Carlson from Ft. Peck reported he had a COOPER'S HAWK in his
yard today, so few birds were present. There were 39 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES at the Ft. Peck Sewage Ponds and 80 AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS below the dam.
Sept 4th Sid Frissell in Emigrant had a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE on his
brush pile - an irregular visitor to his yard.
While Tamara Enz found 1 GREAT EGRET at Pablo NWR in the Mission
Valley on Aug. 27th, , Denver Holt reported that there were 3 GREAT
EGRETS in the trees at Ninepipe NWR yesterday Sept 4th. Denver also
said that while Pablo NWR still had great numbers of shorebirds on the
23rd of August, it is pretty empty now. The 23rd he had 1 BUFF-BREASTED,
500 BAIRD'S, 600 SEMIPALMATED and 50 WESTERN SANDPIPERS.
Sept 4th, Nate Kohler found a single BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and a
juvenile RED KNOT at the Warm Springs Ponds Complex off of I-90. The
RED KNOT appears to be injured and may remain in the area - you could
call Gary Swant in Deer Lodge at 406-846-2451 if interested. There are at
least 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS working the ponds in the area. Nate also
found a SABINE'S GULL at the Warm Springs Sewage Ponds on the 1st.
When Gary arrived there were both an adult and a juvenile SABINE'S GULL.
August 30th there was a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE in the same
area along with 7 BLACK-NECKED STILTS at Deer Lodge.
Bob Rost reported that the Split Pond north of Somers had good shorebirds
Saturday Sept 3rd: 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 LONG-BILLED DOWIT-
CHERS, several STILT SANDPIPERS, WESTERN, BAIRD'S and PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS along with flocks of sparrows and AMERICAN PIPITS.
Alan Nelson went to Giant Springs State Park near Great Falls Sept 4th and
on an island counted 181 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and 35
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS. The Park had a CANADA WARBLER,
WILSON'S. YELLOW, and MACGILLIVRAY WARBLERS along with
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
Richard Mousel in Great Falls had his first hummingbird of the year - a
female
Calliope on Sept 1st.

HUMMINGBIRD, BLUE-HEADED and PHILADELPHIA VIREO, TENNESSEE,
MOURNING, CANADA, MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, OVENBIRD. Culbertson

juvenile
LONG-TAILED JAEGER, which local residents said had been present for a week
eating grasshoppers on the road. It was gone the next day.
