Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Many people responded to a query asking where to locate CHUKAR. One
reliable spot in the county is 1-2 miles up the Whitewater River, north of
I-10, where the water seeps down from the hillside. As many as 20 have
been seen here.
Dave Goodward forwarded a report from the Arrastre Creek area where 2NO2
crosses the creek. About 1/3 mile upstream from the burn, he spotted many
birds, including many woodpeckers working the dead pines. Other sightings
on Aug. 12 included: 5 PINYON JAY, 2 CLARK’S NUTCRACKERS, 2 GRAY
FLYCATCHER, 1 DUSKY FLYCATCHER, 12 WILLOW FLYCATCHER. Later in the day
Dave went to Baldwin Lake. Birds of note there included 4 CASPIAN TERN,
and 1 BLACK TERN. There were also 24 WHITE-FACED IBIS.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Roger Higson reported a banded WESTERN SANDPIPER in the Blythe area. He
also had BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, and WILLET in good numbers on August 14.
The BLUE-FOOTED BOOBY continues to be reported in the Whitewater Delta
area at the end of Colfax. The most recent report was from 7-8a.m. on Aug.
14. At that time, it was at the east end of 76th Ave, about 300 yards
north of the end of 76th, where a cove narrows and extends westward
through the power line corridor.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
A flock a several WOOD STORK continues near the turnoff to Red Hill Marina
from Garst Rd.
A PIPING PLOVER continues to be reported at Red Hill Marina. Henry
Detwiler also reported two PEREGRINE FALCON, one at Red Hill marina, and
another along Davis Rd.
Guy McCaskie reported a number of birds including an adult SOLITARY
SANDPIPER at the Kuhn’s Dairy about 3.5 miles west of Seeley, and adult
RUDDY TURNSTONE at the north end of Garst, a juvenile SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER and an adult BAIRD’S SANDPIPER in an irrigated field about a
mile north of Calipatria, two hatch year FRANKLIN’S GULLS and a one year
old HEERMANN’S GULL in a flooded field near the west end of Young Road, 3
adult male TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS at the Kuhn’s Dairy, and ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER and WESTERN TANAGER.
Cathy McFadden reported seeing 2 NASHVILLE WARBLER, a male WESTERN
TANAGER, a female BULLOCK’S ORIOLE at the Sonny Bono NWRHQ, 3 BANK
SWALLOWS at Finney Lake, and PEREGRINE FALCONS at Ave. 76 and along the
seawall south of Obsidian Butte.
