Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for August 17th,
2006. This report covers the period from August 12th to August 17th and,
will be updated again on August 24th.

A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was observed on the flats at Ninigret Pond at the
Charlestown Breachway on the 15th. On the 14th, a ROYAL TERN was seen there.
The MARBLED GODWIT continues to be reported every day. Other highlights from
the past week included: 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 4 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 10
PIPING PLOVER, 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 11 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 22 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, 1800 COMMON TERN, 30 LEAST TERN, 35 ROSEATE TERN, 16 FORSTER'S
TERN, 7 BLACK TERN and a NORTHERN HARRIER.

At White Brook in Carolina on the 12th, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 5 SOLITARY
SANDPIPER and 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK

On the 14th at Quonochontaug, 3 CLIFF SWALLOW were spotted, and on the 16th,
a LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen there.

At Napatree Point in Westerly, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was reported on the
16th.

At Third Beach restoration area in Middletown on the 16th, 1 STILT
SANDPIPER.

At the north end of Hope Island on the 12th, 1 HUDSONIAN GODWIT was found.

On the 14th at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 2 CATTLE EGRET were reported,
and 1 CATTLE EGRET was seen on the 11th at Marsh Meadows in Jamestown.

At the Slocum Turf farms in North Kingstown on the 14th, 2 BAIRD'S SANPIPER
were observed.

A BLACK VULTURE was reported on the 17th, in Scituate, flying over Route 116.

Finally, although the focus is shorebirds at this time of year, landbirds
are starting to move south. A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was seen at Trustom Pond
this week, and a MOURNING WARBLER was banded at the Kingston Wildlife Research
Station in Kingston on the 13th.
