Welcome to the Birding Hotline for interior Alaska as of September
6, 2005.
An immature YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in a yard on
Love Rd (3.8 miles Chena Hotsprings Rd) on Sunday, September 4.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was soaring over the UAF museum on Saturday,
September 3
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was heard in the Cripple Creek area
on August 30. Another bird was seen on Goldmine Trail on Friday,
September 2.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on Ballaine Rd. also on
Sept. 3: .
Also on the 2nd, a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen mobbing a
NORTHERN HARRIER at the Seasonal pond at Creamer's Refuge,
a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was seen on Lancaster Dr.,
and a flock of AMERICAN PIPITS was at Bentley Pond.
A flock of about 20 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was on the grass along
12th Ave near the Federal Building on Thursday, Sept. 1
A BLACK-BACKED and a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER were
caught at the Alaska Bird Observatory banding station at Creamer's
Refuge on Thursday, September 1.
A MERLIN was seen flying over the intersection of Peger Rd and the
Johannson Expressway on August 25.
Three BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES were on Chena Ridge on August 24.
AMERICAN KESTRELS are still being seen at the hayfields at 3 miles
Chena Hotsprings Road.
Upcoming events include:
A Fall Exploration Walk will take place on September 9 at 6:30 PM.
Join Dr. Susan Sharbaugh, ABO's senior biologist, for an evening stroll
around Creamer's Refuge to learn how many interior Alaska species
prepare for winter. The walk will begin and end at ABO's Center for
Education & Research.
Plan to attend Alaska Bird Observatory annual Open House. From
11 AM to 5 PM on October 15 at the ABO Center for Education &
Research (at Wedgewood Resort). There will be activities,
refreshments, free posters, door prizes, and a BIG sale in the gift shop.
Special programs that day include Owls of Interior Alaska from
Noon - 2 PM. Meet live owls and learn about these special birds
through crafts, activities, and stories.
2:30 - 5:00 PM. Will be an Open House Reception. Enjoy
refreshments, peruse displays about ABO's programs, tour the
facility, visit with staff, and take our bird trivia and identification
challenges.
3:00 PM. Take a leisurely walk on Creamer's Refuge with ABO
senior biologist, Dr. Susan Sharbaugh. Learn how plants and
animals survive our harsh winters. Free!
