This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored
by Birdwatcher's Country Store located at the Orange Street
Travel Center on Orange Street at the Orange Street Exit off
Interstate 90 recorded Thursday August 17, 2006.
Don and Hollie Minnerath in Saco have a PAINTED BUNTING coming
irregularly into their feeders and water. They have a wooded acre so it
is difficult to locate unless it comes in. It was present on August 15th.
If you wish to try to see this bird you should call ahead to 527-3549.
Birding in Westby was pretty darned good today the 17th. There were
CHESTNUT-SIDED, CANADA, MOURNING, MAGNOLIA, WILSON'S
and YELLOW WARBLERS, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH,
AMERICAN REDSTART, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
Flycatcher's also made a good showing with a YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER, at least a dozen ALDER FLYCATCHERS and several
LEAST FLYCATCHERS. Saturday the 12th, there was an EASTERN
PHOEBE in Westby. There are also RUBY-THROATED HUMMING-
BIRDS in town now.
John Carlson reported from Ft. Peck that the warblers arrived in his yard
today the 17th. He had TENNESSEE, YELLOW, BLACK-AND-WHITE,
CHESTNUT-SIDED, ORANGE-CROWNED, MACGILLIVRAY'S, and
WILSON'S WARBLERS along with AMERICAN REDSTART and
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.
Bob Rost reported that he, Janice Jorgensen and another lady saw
a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER on Crane Mountain (south of Ferndale)
on Friday August 11th. There have been no further reports on this
sighting.
Shorebirds are now showing up in good numbers. Mike Schwitters
had a one day CURLEW SANDPIPER on July 17th at Freezout WMA
near Choteau that he photographed - but was not subsequently
relocated. He also had a possible RED-NECKED STINT on July 8th
and 9th but it was always too far away to document before it departed.
Dan Casey had 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER on the Split
Pond on North Somers Road north of Somers on August 8th.
Barb Jaquith on August 13th reported seeing 31 WHIMBRELS on
Cooney Reservoir west of Boyd.
Dan Casey found nesting BLACK SWIFTS on Going-to-the-Sun
Road in Glacier Park. They were visible from a small 5 car pullout
just west of Haystack Creek. The nesting sites are on Haystack Creek
just alongside and slightly behind the waterfall below the arched bridge
where the road crosses Haystack Creek. Look for a large patch of
orange moss directly to the right of the waterfall about halfway down
the plunge portion of the falls.
The BLUE GROSBEAKS that were first reported June 24th on the
Pryor Mountain Road 2.9 miles east from the turnoff on highway 310
just south of Bridger were last reported seen on July 28th by Robin
and Richard Wolcott.
At the Smurfit-Stone Container Plant west of Missoula, Larry Weeks
and I had 19 species of shorebirds in 24 hours.
