The highlight of the week was a dark rumped Pterodroma petrel seen from
Point Dume in Malibu on August 12. The bird was either a HAWAIIAN or
GALAPAGOS PETREL, observed for a few minutes before flying west up the
coast. point Dume proved good for other seabirds with XANTUS'S/CRAVERI'S
MURRELET, CASSIN'S AUKLET and POMARINE JAEGER observed. A PURPLE MARTIN was
also recorded there.
Two REDDISH EGRETS were reported from Ventura County this past week. One
was at Ormond Beach in Port Hueneme on August 14 & 15 and another was at
Mugu Lagoon on August 15.
A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was along the LA River on August 16 & 17. The bird was
several hundred yards north of the Rosecrans crossing. Also in this area on
August 17 was a juvenile SEMPIALMATED SANDPIPER. This bird was about 400
yards north of Rosecrans.
Two CRAVERI'S MURRELETS were seen from Point Vicente on the Palos Verdes
Penninsula on August 12. The birds were southwest of Long Point. CASSIN'S
AUKLETS and a COMMON MURRE were also seen along with many thousands of
shearwaters.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Mugu Lagoon in southwest Ventura County on August
14.
