Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for August 23rd,
2006. This report covers the period from August 18th to August 23rd, and
will be updated again on August 31st.

An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen on Heaton Orchard Road in Richmond on the 22nd,
and on the 20th a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was found there.

On the turf fields along Switch Road, north of Chariho High School, in
Richmond on the 22nd, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was observed.

Reported birds from the Ninigret Pond tidal mudflats at the Charlestown
Breachway this week include: 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and a VIRGINIA RAIL on the
19th, and on the 22nd, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 11
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 BLACK TERN, 4 FORSTER'S TERN, 5 LEAST TERN, 8 COMMON TERN,
2 GLOSSY IBIS, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 3 PIPING PLOVER, 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
25 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and 4 RUDDY TURNSTONE. Two BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were
found on the 23rd, and a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen several times this week.
The MARBLED GODWIT continues.

On the 21st, aboard the Seven B's fishing vessel during the ASRI's Shark
Safari trip, 25 miles south of the Rhode Island coast, 100 WILSON'S
STORM-PETREL, 1 NORTHERN GANNET and 20 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE were found.

At the East Providence reservoir this week, 1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 7 WOOD
DUCK were recorded.

A ROYAL TERN was seen over Trustom Pond in South Kingston on the 19th.
Other sightings that day included: 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 3
BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 1 BROWN THRASHER and a PIED-BILLED GREBE
on the pond.

COMMON NIGHTHAWKS begin their push southward at this time of year and small
numbers were reported from several locations this past week.
