A juvenile BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK has been reported at the Calgary Zoo's private

bird north of Water Valley in late spring.
At least 4 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were observed along the Bow River in east Fish Creek
PP. Jeff Bank observed a single bird at Mallard Point on Aug 21 and he and Terry
Korolyk observed another 3 in Hull's wood from the mouth of Fish Creek westward up
the Creek toward the Park access road. They observed a good movement of small
songbirds there including a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 5 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, and at
least 2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
At Mallard Point in the morning of Aug 22, Jeff Bank also observed a MAGNOLIA
WARBLER and 5 AMERICAN REDSTARTS amongst other migrants.
Andrew Slater observed a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER in Bowmont Park in NW Calgary on Aug
23. Banders at Inglewood BS in Calgary have been banding MACGILLIVRAY'S, MOURNING
and CONNETICUT WARBLERS as well as good numbers of OVENBIRDS.
Ann Jones had a juvenile male OVENBIRD at her home near Douglas Fir Trail in
Edworthy Park on Aug 23.
On Aug 15 a SAY'S PHOEBE was seen by Gus Yaki and others at Confluence Park off
Beddington Trail.

Bow River at Hull's Wood on Aug 22.

km east of Hwy 2 between 6-7 pm on Aug 21.

Bird Study Group meets 1st Wednesday of the month, Room 211, BioSciences Building, U
of C except June through August when field trips replace the meetings. Contact Phil
Cram 228-4142.
The first meeting will be on Wednesday September 6, 2006 at 7:30 PM in Room 211 of
the BioSciences Building at the University of Calgary. Doors open at 7:00 PM. We
have a double-bill to kick off this season's program. Kathleen Roman will be showing
her best bird images from 2006 and Brian Elder will speak on the topic Birds
throughout Civilization.
In response to feedback we received towards the end of last season, we will not only
aim to start our meetings promptly at 7:30 PM, but also to conclude proceedings by
9:00 PM. Of course, post-meeting networking is an important part of the evening and
is very much encouraged.
The Bird Study Group meets on the first Wednesday of each month from September
through May. We aim to encourage birding in the Calgary region and beyond, by
helping local birders develop their knowledge and skills and by disseminating the
results of regional birding activities (counts, censuses, etc.). Our members are
active local birders, keen to share their experience and knowledge with each other
and to help new birders become more proficient.
