HIGHLIGHTS
American Golden Plover, Baird's Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher,
Black-headed Gull,
East End birders should be aware that land bird migration is in full
swing on western Long Island, and it might behoove some of us to check
migrant spots in the coming week. It seems to me that Neotropical
migrants are arriving earlier in Spring and departing earlier in fall.
Whereas, 25 years ago few migrant warblers were seen in April, it seems
that in the last 5 years, most warbler species are being seen in April.
Likewise, warblers seem to be far more common in August in recent years.
The bulk of migration may still be in May and September, but it seems to
me that a shift in timing is occurring.
At Mecox, the flat is slowly being inundated, and the number of birds is
reduced compared to last weekend. The MARBLED GODWIT was last on Aug 15
(CG). A ROYAL TERN was on the flat on Aug 18 (CG). On Aug 20, the East
End's first BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was found along with 3 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, 1 juvenal LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, and 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER
(AB). In late afternoon there were 30 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 5 BLACK
TERNS and more than 200 FORSTER'S TERNS (HM, CG). An adult BLACK-HEADED
GULL was at Mecox on Aug 23 along with 5 BLACK TERNS (SA)
At Davis Creek in North Sea, an adult CLAPPER RAIL along with 6 chicks
were spotted on Aug 23 (W&GBk).
At the Ponquogue Bridge at Shinnecock Bay there was an AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVER and an unidentified PHALAROPE on the mud flats east of the bridge
on Aug 21 (B&ESi).
A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen along Sunrise Highway in Westhampton at dawn
on Aug 21 (MSch).
At Cupsogue County park there was a BLACK TERN on Aug 22 (BA, KT). There
were 48 ROYAL TERNS at Pike's Beach on Aug 22. Bob Adamo noted that at
least 26 of these birds were banded. Seventy-four ROYAL TERNS were
spotted here on Aug 23 (SA).
Four TURKEY VULTURES were spotted over Sound Avenue in Calverton on Aug
18 (EL).
Out of our area, a WILSON'S PHALAROPE was spotted at Tung Ting Pond in
Centerport on Aug 24 (BB). This pond can be found at the intersection of
Rt 25a and Centershore Rd, and is best viewed from the parking lot of
the Chalet Motor Inn.
Even further a field, the CRESLI trip to the Great South Channel, which
lies east of Cape Cod, recorded the following species from Aug 13-15:
2940 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 1281 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 1
MANX SHEARWATER, 630 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 2 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 1
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, 8 SOUTH POLAR SKUAS, 2 POMARINE JAEGERS & 16
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES (AW).
This week I received reports from Bob Adamo, Andy Baldelli, Willy &
Gerry Becker (W&GBk), Brent Bomkamp, Chris Gangemi, Nick Hamblet, Arthur
Kopleman, Ernie Lewis, Hugh McGuinness, Annette Oliveira, Karen &
Barbara Rubinstein (K&BRu), Mike Scheibel (MSch), Bill & Eileen Singer

Good Birding to All!
