This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Friday, August 25th, 2006.

A WESTERN REEF HERON, first discovered in Maine in the harbor behind Frisbee's
General Store in Kittery Point on August 18th, was first seen in New Hampshire on
August 19th and has now been seen on every day this past week in New Castle. It has
been seen along Route 1B from the general area of the Riverside Cemetery in New
Castle looking towards the Wentworth Hotel and from near where a sign is visible
that says "Goat Island Saltwater Fishing Access". The best strategy for locating the
bird has been to scan around the islands and up the channels near the Wentworth
Hotel at low tide. The heron is often in the company of SNOWY EGRETS. It has also
been seen on mudflats west of the Wentworth Coolidge Mansion.

An ATLANTIC PUFFIN, and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES were reported seen from a whale-watch
boat in New Hampshire waters on August 23rd, and a BLACK TERN was reported from New
Hampshire waters on August 18th.

A MARBLED GODWIT was seen in Henry's Pool in Hampton on August 20th, and again in
Hampton Harbor on August 23rd.

A BLACK-HEADED GULL and a LAUGHING GULL were seen along the coast from south of
Odiorne Point, and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS and 5 ROSEATE TERNS
were reported from Rye Ledges, all on August 23rd.

Waterfowl migration is just beginning and an interesting report from the Rochester
Waste Water Treatment Plant on August 24th included a NORTHERN SHOVELER, a
BUFFLEHEAD, 4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and 12 WOOD DUCKS. The plant is
only open on weekdays.

Shorebird migration is in full swing, and highlights from last weeks reports
included 814 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS on Seabrook Beach on August 21st, and inland
sightings that included 87 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 33 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS on mud flats
at Peverly Pond in Canterbury on August 22nd, and 38 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 51
KILLDEER at Pillsbury Pond in Webster on August 23rd.

A SEASIDE SPARROW was reported from Henry's Pool in Hampton on August 22nd.

A BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen just south of Odiorne Point on August 22nd, and one was
reported being seen in Little Harbor from Fort Stark in New Castle on August 19th.

5 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were reported flying over Great Boar's Head in Hampton
on August 23rd.

9 GREEN HERONS were seen at the pond located behind the Steeplegate Mall in Concord
on August 22nd.

In the White Mountains, a BICKNELL'S THRUSH and 3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were
reported from Mount Osceola, and a hiker on Mount Clinton reported 3 BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKERS, 5 GRAY JAYS, 6 BOREAL CHICKADEES, and 8 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, all on
August 22nd.

7 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were reported from Lake Umbagog on August 20th.

40 WOOD DUCKS were seen on Eel Pond in Rye on August 20th.

Landbird migration is also underway as evidenced by a MOURNING WARBLER seen in North
Hampton and a WILSON'S WARBLER seen in Warner, both on August 22nd.

An EASTERN SCREECH OWL was heard on Prospect Street in Dover on August 24th, and a
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard in Warner on August 22nd.

There were many reports of migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS from several locations during
the past week.

GREAT EGRETS have been reported from several inland locations during the past week,
in addition to the usual coastal sightings.
