This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, August 25 at 12:30 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to
report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting
the transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara
is (805) 964-8240.
Shorebird habitat is good at Devereux Slough just now. You can view the
birds from the first observation pull-out at the northeast side of the
slough. On Wednesday, both a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER
were in the northeast corner. Also here were several LESSER YELLOWLEGS and
19 CANADA GEESE.
In Goleta Slough, as seen from the UCSB overlook just east of the fire
station on campus, a COMMON MOORHEN was seen on Wednesday.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Goleta Beach on Sunday the 20th, in with the
flock of Rock Pigeons in the east parking lot. That bird was missed later in
the week.
About 70 BLACK SKIMMERS are on East Beach.
Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included an adult BALD
EAGLE and an OSPREY.
At the Santa Maria Sewage Plant, a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was still present
yesterday. Offshore of the Santa Maria River mouth, thousands of Sooty
Shearwaters are now being seen, with a few Pink-footed in the mix.
Both the CACKLING GOOSE and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front pond at
Waller Park in Santa Maria.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
